Moab 2011

Hello there!

I'm planning a trip to Moab next year.

I was hoping on the 1st week of August 2011.

I'd ride my BMW ADV 1200gs out there from Illinois and hopefully fly the wife out there and then from the hotel we could dualsport in the national parks.

I found a great resource at http://www.treknow.com/

I bought a cd that rates the trails by diffuculty/sceenery and miles etc.

I'd just then would download the gps routes to my Garmin nuvi.

I'm just a rookie dualsporter. I plan on doing the easy routes that I and the wife can enjoy. I might head out myself with good freind to venture on the next level without the wife too.

Any advise you could give me when out in Arches Nat park and or Canyonlands etc. Good stuff, bad stuff to watch out for...

What are the most common items needed for short day trips in the parks etc?

I'll have tools, water and phone etc. But not sure since this will be my first big dualsporting trip.

I was in Moab a few years back on my street bike. We did Arches and Canyonlands, Mounment Valley 4 corners etc just on the paved roads.

I'm really excited to do the dualsport experience this time around.

Thanks in Advance for all your help!

Mike J.

Thanks for the reply!

I rode up there July/Aug in 2009 on my street bike.
Was not that hot compared to Illinois humidity.
It was 100 in Moab but not unbearble.
We did a 1/2 day rental with Quads with a guide. He was a trials rider that would work in Moab in the Summer.
He was our guide from the Quad rental place.
He made everthing look easy. (While talking on his phone when riding!) LOL
He was great guide.
My buddy and I were ok on the quads so the guide felt comfortable taking us to some of his more advanced spots.
I'll post some pics of our trek that day and some pic with my street bike that I no longer have.
: )

Spring-March to early May
Fall - Mid September till it snows.

We are kinda lucky here on the western slope in that we can pick or choose our times to go.
I would suggest early fall season would be your best bet for weather.

If you are stuck with the dates in August you might want to stay up in the mountains of western Colorado. For example, Telluride is about 3 hours to Moab. You could go down to Moab for a day or so and back up into the hills when you get burnt.
