Hancock Pass

Hancock road repair has been completed and the pass is now open. No more slipping around the bridge.

Just got home

Just got back home. We left from Harrison Ark and went south on 7 till we picked up the TAT. Rode a bit of AR, OK (what a grind), NM, and turned around at Branson CO. I think that's the smallest town I've ever seen! You have to leave town to change your mind.

We camped at Adair State Park(Don't stay there unless you really like trains), Some State Park I can't remember the name of, and Black Mesa State Park (Awesome stop with a hot shower). We also camped out on some ranch land after meeting the owner when my buddy ran his KTM out of gas. We rode 1758 miles round-trip (400 were in the rain). AR was very cool, OK sucked (both ways), and NM/CO were both awesome. We had a blast! We nearly got bitten by rattlesnakes, almost got hit by deer, figured out that 'Mountain House' eggs with bacon is NOT a keeper, and confirmed that givi bags make perfect beer coolers.

I was the only bike to go down and I'm still trying to figure out how that was someone else's fault . I had to zip-ty my bike back together in order to make it home with all my parts. We're planning to complete CO next spring. Having gotten just a taste of CO, I'm ready to go NOW!

I can't say enough horrible things about a KLR's stock rear shock. Jesus that thing is a crime. I can't wait to finish the trail. I think I'll ride this KLR into the ocean and just leave it there, LOL!

Stay safe!

Little Wan enjoy Tin Cup, we sure did! I am editing video and working on the ride report now. Best of luck to everybody, and have fun....

I guess there's two of us from Fl. thats going to do this ride at the beginning of July next year. Got a couple drz's that should make the trip.

I have heard that the Jellico, Tn start of the ride is a little too much pavement, anybody know anything about it?

Yep... 80-90% pavement. Still a nice ride at least in 2009 when my son and I did it. I found it useful since it served to allow me to get settled on the bike with the gear and take care of the minor irritants and unforeseen problems before tackling the more difficult and remote parts of the TAT. It was a chance to fully develop a riding routine and iron out the packing and unpacking camp setup and tear down problems. YMMV.

Thanks Jack for the info.
I've heard about a lot of pavement out of Jellico. About when does the pavement go away(20-30%) and the dirt/gravel roads start to kick in? Do you have to get out of Tn. before that starts? I just don't want to waste a lot of time riding pavement and wearing out my tires earlier that expected.

Thanks
R.F.

Actually it's the middle part of TN that's paved. There is some great gravel sections between Jellico and Sparta, then you have pavement but it's mostly single lane twisty stuff, then as you go west of I-65 you hit the super slick creek crossings and gravel till you get to MS.

Cool2 TAT August 2011

I need some suggestions on a bike that can get me from Maryland, down to Jellico, across to New Mexico, then down through NM and Texas in a highly reliable fashion without breaking my pocket book.

A friend and I will be doing the eastern portion of the TAT in August 2011. We plan to ride from Jellico to New Mexico, then head south down the Shadow of the Rockies toward Mexico.

I was going to take my GS1200. I love it and it's reliable but considering I would have to leave it in NM until the next year to do the western portion, I have decided against taking it and will instead by a new bike.

You all have provided some great insights to the TAT. Thanks.

All feedback welcome. Cheers and keep on keepin on!!!

I can! The suspension is terrible!

If you like to ride any faster than a crawl over rough roads, you should seriously consider a major suspension upgrade. Other than that, the ground clearance is minimal. It's a good street bike, though!
