According to Les Emory, of Norvil Motorcycle Co., in Staffordshire, later years are better for a coupl'a reasons.

The crankcases and timing cases are beefier on the 850's. The earlier ones had rods that were prone to fractures. The later 850's have disc brakes both front and rear, too.

I lucked out, ended up with the 850 before I'd done much research.

Well, at under 70 hp, and weighing over 430, (stock) it may get me home by the time the souffle needs to come out of the oven.

IIRC, the 850 had exactly the same HP as the 750, just more robust construction.

Let me share with you my vast experience of Norton ownership....ummmm, lets see, that would be about1 1/2 days. :): Actually I have been seriously researching them and looking for one about a year. Make sure you listen to people like Gyro who have been down this road.

First buy nothing that you have not had checked out. I found that you can buy a completely restored one for 1/2 to 2/3rds what it would cost to do yourself. There are lots of things on a 30 year old bike that can look correct but can cost lots of money to return to good working order or proper period "correctness"

There are standard ignition, carb, brake and tranny upgrades that if your buddy has not done you will end up doing.

On the subject of the 72 the “Norton Buyers Guide” specifically reverences the 72 as the "Combat fiasco of 1972-73". Norton modified the engine that year and it took most of the model year to get it working correctly.

You buddies may be just fine, just ask someone to look at it for you.

Last bit of advice…don’t ride it! If you do you will buy it. I know with the 850 they may only have 60 to 70 HP but they have monster amounts of low end torque. That coupled with the low gearing makes them a neck snapping experience off the line. :eek: HUGE giggle factor. It’s like being at the range firing a 9mm and someone hands you a 44 mag to fire….BLAAAAAAAMMMMMM!

My last words of wisdom. Don't go down the vintage British road unless in your heart you know that you have to. That road is far more about passion than logic.
