BMW R90 Ring question...

Doing some research on whether VW or Saab rings will work on an R90. Might have found some. Can someone verify, with a stock set in a box preferably. The thickness of the rings.

Are they (1) 1.5mm (Middle) 2mm and (Oil) 4mm? On the ones I bought from Hucky’s for my R100 it stated the sizes on the box.

Just curious, why not use BMW parts? Cost? Availability? Something else?

That's all.

My father-in-law used some VW rings for his R100 years ago on the recommendation of a friend. And loves them. Current pricing puts a set of 4 VWs at under $20, versus $90 for a set of 2 from BMW.

On this forum, under parts there are some references as well.

Anyway, I dont want this thread to go down the wrong rabbit trail so would really like to hear from someone who has some stock R90 rings in the original box...

Stock VWs have bore sizes of 77, 83, 85.5, 90, 93, and 94mm. The relevant sizes for Airheads are the 90 for R90 and 94 for R100.

The 90mm bore VW is a 1700cc Type 4 motor, and any reputable supplier should list the ring width when selling rings only.

The 94mm bore VW is a 2000cc Type 4 motor.

Edit: looked it up myself--1700 stock had 2/2/5 mm ring thickness. This may not work for you.

All I need is someone that has the correct R90 rings. I know I can get VW rings in many sizes. Just need to know what stock is...

Where are you getting the VW prices from?
Would love to know!
And remember, all these VW rings will be for cast iron cylinders.

Yes, these were for pre 81. I am getting some more tomorrow as a matter of fact. They are actually less than $20 for a set of four for the R100. Thats why I was interested in the 900 info.
