Thomas Smith

Thomas Smith, Rt 52 & cr 52/02 just West of Gilbert. This one threw us a curve the last trip through, it's about 2 miles West of the listed location.

So, this is where all of those Johns came from?

Welch

Welch, Rt 52 Bypass overlook?

Are we in the right place?

Behind the fence?

In front of the fence?

I can assure you that we are overlooking Welch.

Where there's smoke, there's fire

And I have been smellin' smoke since the meet that we had in Charleston.

WVChrome, I think, ask the question: Is there a recommended route to all of these?

Mr. Geigers response: No, but that sounds like something for you guys to do.

I'll say it again, I have been smellin' smoke since the meet that we had in Charleston.

A lap of WV incorporating some of the markers? I think including them all would be a bit ambitious. Vet them, and the area they are in, with the goal of a scenic and historical tour of Almost Heaven? I know, I know, it will be like picking a favorite child.

I'm pretty handy with the geeky map stuff, and would gladly volunteer my time. I would even commit to sprucing up the documentation on any marker that Martha and I have collected that passes the vetting process, some of them woefully deficient I admit.

We could publish a file that anyone could use, not just the gps geeks, in the LDT forum.

Anybody else smell smoke? Wanna kick this thing up a notch?

Chip,

Good idea. I've been so busy getting the Christmas Cantata I wrote ready for the first rehearsals the past 2 weeks that I have sadly let this project slide the past month. I did update the spreadsheet, but failed to find time to publish it. Shame on me.

Since the remaining markers are spread out, it would be a nice winter project to ride out and grab one on the days when ice isn't the primary paving material on the highway. I'm planning to ride up to my VA Hospital appointment on Wednesday in Pittsburgh, then come back through Preston County looking for a couple "missing - maybe replaced by now" markers. Supposed to be sunny and in the 60s. Whoo-hoo. Break out the tank top and shorts for the ride.

I'll try to get the spreadsheet finished and posted soon. Right now, I have to head up to Fairmont to make copies of the revised Cantata and get them in the choir folders before rehearsal tonight.

Toodles.

Might want to consider individual county tours, which could then be linked into a "lap of WV". Riders who want to participate could choose a county, map out their favorite (paved) roads with marker locations. Maybe include eatery, gas station and possibly lodging information (keep it simple), riders could also include references to favorite rides in the county that aren't marker related - dual-sport or other recreational points of interest.

It might even be possible to vet what we can come up with with the individual county tourism / business development boards and maybe get links/ pictures, etc... added to the county websites. Don't know if the individual county administrators are aware of how many county markers are missing - might provide more interest / funding to get the missing county markers restored.

I was also thinking it might be reasonable to group markers by genre - civil war buffs might be more interested in scenic routes to relevent sites, railroad buffs... - you get the picture.

Start small, it could get pretty big in the end. (maybe too big?)

Updates - Finally!!

OK, I finally found time to sit down and properly update the spreadsheet and latest posts. It looks like we have 815 Markers documented so far! Only 21 remaining, plus another 15 or so that are scheduled for replacement that may or may not already be in place. (See list below) I have tried to take into account the duplicate listings for county line markers, since they are listed in each county's data.

Happy (belated) New Year to the Marker Taggers!

It was such a nice day today (sunny and 60s) that it would have been a sin not to ride, even though I still have stitches in my arm from surgery almost 3 weeks ago. The arm is feeling good, so I thought I'd ride out to the Bruceton Mills area (about 140 miles round-trip) to get the Mason-Dixon Marker on Rt 26. No luck! I thought they were going to replace this one by now, but I was wrong.

Save yourself a ride out there until maybe later in the spring or summer. Maybe it will be up by then.

Looking forward to finding those last 20 or so Markers. Safe riding to you all.

It lives!

Thanks for the new marker. I'm at work, so all I can see are the little boxes with a red X. I'll be sure to check it out as soon as I get home.

I have a few lined up for the first day off without rain or snow.

Thanks again!

I was hoping to head up Rt 2 to the other Jackson County Marker (Washington's Land) but I ran out of time yesterday.

I hope you are healing up well.

Nice one. I will update the spreadsheet soon.

I don't remember any of the Morrison stores. When did they close up? Any around the Clarksburg area that you know of?

Thanks again.
