Irish Interlude

I'm sat in a hotel in Ayr (Scotland), with a 360 mile ride home ahead of me tomorrow. I've spent the last week over in Ireland, riding some great roads through wonderful scenery and meeting some great people.

Starting in Dublin, I first headed down to the Wicklow mountains:

Wicklow Gap:

Sally Gap:

Look at the road!

I like the approach to health and safety - by request

Then after a second night in Dublin, I rode to Sligo:

Trim castle.

Some of the roads had a lot more greenery growing up the middle than this one.

Day three and I took a scenic route to Letterkenny via Killybegs & Enniskillen:

The quay looked interesting so I went to have a closer look.

Teelin Quay

On Saturday Chubbythumper and Kyle very kindly showed me around the Donegal and Antrim coasts:

Chubbythumper will go to any lengths to get a good photo

The road to Portsalon.

Three Advs on the quay at Portsalon.

We took the ferry from Greencastle across to Northern Ireland.

The coast road from Bushmills towards Larne is amazing - no photos because it started blowing a gale and throwing hailstones at us, but trust me, it's brilliant.

After the obligatory family visits in Bangor, on Sunday I rode down the Ards peninsular to Portaferry:

A rainbow at Donaghadee.

At Portaferry the ferry had just arrived when I got there, so I decided to take it to Strangford - but the ferry suddenly stopped unloading and left the slipway. There was an emergency call for the lifeboat, and it uses the same slipway.

Portaferry from Strangford - after heavy rain earlier in the morning the sun came out and it was glorious.

Finally, today, it was time to leave on the boat to Stranraer:

The famous cranes Samson and Goliath of Harland & Wolff on the sky-line.

Travelling alone can be a bit lonely, but I've managed to meet people along the way and after the problems I've been having recently with the bike, the offers of help have been greatly appreciated.

It's not going to be 14 years before my next visit over there.

My other pics are here.
