No way

It doesn't work that way. It is an output ONLY. It isn't just a connector there are electronics inside that change the voltage.

Any word on this? Does it draw any power when the bike is off and no gadgets are plugged in?

Pronator,

Good question and lots of people ask.

I have seen it tested and it does not draw power from the battery when it has no load. The manufacturer states this too.

On the other hand, I'm sure cheap car cigarette usb chargers draw power to light that little LED bulb they have.

Bumping this thread has reminded me that I should post our experiences.

We installed one on each of our F658's before setting out to travel teh back roads of New Zealand for a month at Christmas.

Rain, man we live in the sub tropics and I have never seen rain like that which we experienced on the west coast of the South Island. The Kiwi's called it a "rain bomb", we just called it bloody biblical.

The USB outlets were installed on the dash beside the rev counter, and I used a lead to run to my phone in the tank bag. Worked perfectly and with the closed cover over it not a drop of water got in.

Burnzy's USB adapter is definitely the ducks nuts.

Am I correct in assuming that I can run it through my fuse block under the seat, and I will operate as if it was wired off of the battery? So as to charge my IPhone or BT helmet set?

Super Cool looking product, I am placing my order.

I finally got around to installing mine. simple installation .. just crimped spade connectors, and attached to the 12v accessory socket on the scrambler. I tested the socket (not the USB), and it was reading around 13v, which I assume is pretty normal (bike was off, it's a permanantly powered socket).

I then plugged in a short iPhone lead that I use with my laptop, and got the dreaded charging not supported message. It shows the plug icon on the phone, but not the charge icon.

Any suggestions ?

Crozz as per my email to you the other day...
Try the cable that came with your iphone. Old ipod and original iphone cables do not charge the newer models.
I saw this problem before and the owner updated his iphone firmware which fixed the problem. (There were charging updates in the firmware.)
Test the usb charger with another device if you have it. If it still doesn't work, I'll send you a replacement.

Hi. I tried the cable that came with the iphone, and I am having the same issue. I'm running IOS 4.2.1 if that is any help. I will try my wifes phone (which i think is 4.1) and also an iPod and let you know how it goes.

Please make sure you have the polarity correct. Red to positive and black to negative. If that fails then I'll send you a replacement right away.

USB Power Socket arrived

Stephen,

The USB power socket and additional waterproof sleeve that I ordered on 9th March arrived in the UK on the 18th March I plumbed it in on Friday and can report that the kit is all working in perfect harmony.

Thank you for the prompt dispatch of a good bit of kit.

Ride safe.

Regards

Tim

G'day, I carry an iPad I want to charge as I go, but it requires more power than an iPhone etc.

The iphone/ipod charges are 5V, 1amp and the Ipad are 5V, 2Amp. Do you have anything to suit?

I'm curious about this too (2Amp) I've got a Samsung Galaxy Tab that I would like to charge while riding as I plan to use it as my media/gps unit. It also needs 2Amp to charge as well.
