2010 Big Bend Ride

Still learning how to do these reports, so thought I'd get some more practice. This was a ride from my home near Morgan City, LA to the Big Bend area of Texas.

Stopped for the night in New Braunfels. Went to have a look around and saw this:

Seems quite a few of the towns in the hill country have these neat little river parks.

Headed out of San Antonio on Hwy 90 toward Del Rio

Crossed the Pecos River on this bridge. Howling cross winds had me slowed to a crawl.

The law west of the Pecos

Saw this guy along the road between Sanderson and Marathon

Rode on to Alpine and stopped for the night. Headed down toward the Rio Grande the next day.

Cathedral Mountain

Terlingua Trading Co

Old mining artifacts at Terlingua ghost town

On the road outside Lajitas

Contrabando Creek movie set on the Rio Grande

View from a high hill on El Camino Del Rio. This scene is probably photographed quite a bit.

Looking back down the road

Being from Louisiana, I'm struck by the openness of this country and the distances between towns. Awesome. This is on the highway between Presidio and Marfa

Elephant Rock

Old church somewhere between Presidio and Marfa

Approach to McDonald Observatory. When I first spotted these, they looked about 3 miles away. Seemed like it took 20 miles of curvy roads to get there.

Looking down from the parking lot of the Hobby-Eberly telescope

Fort Davis. This seems like a pretty remote area even today. Must have felt really isolated in the late 1800's

Well, that's all the pix worth sharing. This was a great ride in beautiful country. One thing that quickly became obvious is that I didn't allocate enough time for sightseeing in the area. So many more places I wanted to go. I think at least 3 days in the Big Bend area would be appropriate.

I'll be back!

Great pics and thanks for sharing. One of the best places to ride in the US. See any Blue Bonnets?

Bluebonnets appear around March through April in Texas. Big Bend, like most of Texas, it depends on amount of rain we receive. Last year was excellent, this year has been dry, so they will be less beautiful. I noticed some Bluebonnet plants just starting to show this morning on a walk around my land.

The Texas Hill Country is my favorite place to view them and I am headed that way in 2 weeks. I live on the northern edge of the Hill Country so they area everywhere around here too. I have seen them every year and it never gets old seeing them. A special time of year to us Texans. Even the scent is amazing. Blue fields for as far as the eye can see... Only in Texas.

Glad to see more people from Louisiana getting down the road and seeing things. Have not been to Big Bend in several years. Thanks for sharing the trip with us. Great pictures of a great place.
