Cruising through a Long Leaf Pine forest in the South
Just got back from a nice 150 mile run through Blackwater. Really nice day for a ride. I've been studing plants for the last few years so I figured I would share some of what I've learned. You fast guys probably never notice this stuff at all.
This wouldn't make for a good Beatles tune
Looks like someone hit this log, weird.
Found a nice Pitcher Plant stand, these things were massive!
Lots of Sphagnum Moss around too.
The controlled burning out in BW is really a good thing. This is what a Long Leaf Pine forest should look like. Notice how quicky the Wiregrass grows back.
Here is a good side by side of a unburned/burned part
After a massive water crossing.
Tourtise food - Gopher Apple
Eastern Atlantic Cedar.
Red Titi. If you see this plant, you're about to find water.
Long leaf pine is interesting. It's juvinelle stage looks like a bundle of grass and stays that way for quite sometime. It can resist fire. Once it begins to grow its vulnerable. Here is a juvinelle and a developing pine.
Nasty ass Green Briar
There was a bit of eriosion from all the rain
Lost in the woods
The Golden Club is starting to come in as well.
Made my way to Bear Lake. Very peaceful right now
And finally home!
It takes a lot of water to make dual sporting look this hard.

One of the good things about our FL is that we always have a lot of green & many empty sandy logging road through it.

Nice pics and info. Someone asked me if that was a type of moss last week. Now that I know what it is, I still cannot pronounce it!
