Laurel Springs / Boone area lodging

I'm headed down the BRP in a couple weeks and trying get a couple possible options for staying in the Laurel Springs or Boone area. I found Freebornes, which looks Harleyish, but ...........

I haven't looked in Boone too much, so anyone got any suggestions

Lot of great dual sporting in the area. The folks at Freebornes are great.

In Boone, there is the Daniel Boone KOA that is clean and off the beaten path.

Guess I should have clarified my trip. I've got a conference in Charlotte on Monday, so I've got to pack for that. So I won't have room for camping gear. I'm planning on doing the BRP on Friday and Saturday, then end up around the Dragon and Cherola skyway on Sunday.

Not much time to enjoy everything, but its one of the few weekends that I"ll have all to myself.

I want to make as far down the BRP as I can on Friday, so Freeborne's or Boone is a reasonable goal.

I found a couple small hotels around Boone that might work, but good to know Freebornes is decent. Thanks

Laurel Springs area

Depends on where you prefer to sleep. I really prefer the Laurel Springs area due to it's smaller size and more laid back way of life. They have a hotel and campground right at the intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway that caters to motorcycle riders, I've stopped there many times. Several B&B's in the area (check out grapestompers.com - Tom also has a B&B there and will share info about the area). Jefferson / west jefferson and Sparta are all good options. Quite a few parks and wilderness areas for camping as well as places to eat and hotels. Sparta larger with bigger hotels and a few resort type places. Fantastic roads for riding. A couple of options along the BRP in the area as well - cabins or lodges. Doe Run Inn and Groundhog Mtn in the VA portion of the BRP are nice areas. Whole area very rich in local wineries, I suggest googleing a few and visiting them, they can also suggest places to stay.

Boone has grown into a fairly large city now and tolerates motorcyclists but doesn't throw out the welcome mat. My personal preference is the Laurel Springs area, leaving there on Hwy 16 or 18 to US 421 and then 77 into Charlotte, all good roads.

Enjoy your trip, too many places outside of Boone to stay unless you really want a bit of traffic to make you feel at home.

If you need to hit Charlotte then get off BRP and go through Sparta, good place to visit and has quite a selection of local wines and beer available. From there pick up I77 straight into Charlotte. If time too short then the Fancy Gap area of VA offers places worth exploring also.

LLM - I live in Pineola, NC around the 312 mm on the Parkway. It's just south of the Linn Cove Viaduct, south of Boone near Grandfather Mountain. Within a mile of the Parkway is Huskins Motor Court (a fifties-style Mom n Pop place) 828.733.2564 and the Pineola Inn 828.733.4979. Great Italian food next door at the Italian Family Restaurant open Tues thru Sunday from 11am till 9pm. Fuel next door to the restaurant at the Laurel Country Store. Thirty miles of good riding on NC 181 south is Morganton on I-40 for your link to Charlotte. Call me if you're going to stop here 828.387.7222 THANKS - Stan

I almost always stay at the Holiday Inn Express when I'm in Boone. I've always found the rooms are very clean and well kept, and the beds comfortable. Price is on par. HI Express affords me nothing great, but (thusfar) predictable comfort.

Boone = over priced and over crowded.

I'd stay in Sparta, NC at the Allegahny Inn http://www.alleghanyinn.com/ It is just a few miles off the BRP and is still a nice quiet mountain town. There are a lot of good backroads to ride in the area also.
