Back in the day

From the softball field to the old general store in klyodye, it was about 85 miles. We started riding it in teh 70's, it was somewhat maintained until the mid 90's. After a 7 year hiatus to let my spine heal, I did the ride in 2002 and was surprised to see how it had turned into a rock infested trail in several spots. The store was still open, the gas pumps closed but they would have jug gas for me. That used to be day loop with lunch at the store. When I did it in 02, we took a trail through the Santa Teresa mountains out near Pima then slabbed it back to Mammoth before dark - The trail got rougher and I definitely got older. We did some overnight rides when the lodge behind the store was operating and a there is a rancher in 4 mile who would put us up too. Every time I suggest the ride now, the guys I dragged through in 02 threaten to harm me. There are many trails in the area that saw very little traffic decades ago that I am curious to check out. This post makes me want to check in with a few rancher and see if I can still string together some of my old rides - When the store /post office was running and they had a gas pump, lodging, etc, it was a great area to ride. Thanks for the post, it brings back a lot of good memories. Lots of character out there, plenty of good stories.

Nice report.

So where is the locked gate with the nervous woman with the shotgun? I was under the impression it was between Turkey Cr. and Klondyke.

Going to buy a better headlight now?

Believe it or not I drove a stock 86.5 Nissan 4X4 pickup from Klondyke to 1/2 way up the rug road and back in the mid 90's. I had been hunting at Parsons Grove area and decided to try to make it out to Mammoth rather than go back through Turkey Cr. Big mistake. I had never heard of the rug road before. About 1/2 way up I pulled out on a switchback and walked the rest. I decided it was too risky to do the rest so had to backtrack all the way back through that rough stuff. Miserable.

The nervous woman with the shotgun was between Turkey Creek and Klondyke. There's a fairly obvious 'Y' in the road going the direction we were. She is up the split that heads North.

I had an X2 HID at home, but I didn't have the right electrical system for it. Now I do!
