DL650 vs DL1000

Both models of the V-Strom have been met with rave reviews, and I realize both share many parts....does anyone have any experience with both models that can offer a comparison?

Specifically, is there a noticeable difference in power, and does anyone with a 650 miss the power of the 1000? I would hate to get the 650, only to wish I had forked out bucks for the 1000 later on because of the power.

On the other hand, the lower seat height of the 650 is of interest to a short dude like me (5'8", 31" inseam).

Would initially purchase with the intent of exploring fire roads and such, but would eventually like to be able to replace my road bike(s). Looking for a one size fits all.
