Not so well known areas of Austria

I want to share some impressions of the not so well known areas of Austria, of the big and well known alpine passes are many reports and pics online. There is almost no tourism and these areas are also not very high populated, that makes them perfect for dual sport riding

April 2010:
The area between Linz and Vienna an between the Danube and the Czech border is called the Waldviertel (means forest district).
One week before riding there I was in this area for a business trip. The whole area was still covered with snow. The following week the temp. rose up to 20C and it was always sunny, so I called a friend (Andi) and we rode to the Waldviertel. All the snow was gone, a lot of dirt was left
Meeting at the Autobahn parking area:

After 1,5 hours of highway riding we arrived at the interesting part of the Waldviertel, where we stayed two days.
We slept at a small motorcycle pension, the owner is riding a 990 ADV and knows a lot of legal gravel tracks. He explained them to us in the evening while we where drinking some beers with him. LINK to the pension!

There are not only forest roads, also a lot of open field tracks are there.

Small and old villages

In the middle of the nowhere is the border to the Czech republic.

Back south on small gravel roads

Another small forest lake

Then it was back home on the highway again

Innviertel

The Innviertel is located north of Salzburg along the German border. The funny orange bikes are built there. Its a small hilly area with a lot of forests and agricultural used fields and grassland.
This area is only 40 minutes riding from my home. First weekend of may I meet with a friend (Bernd) a we rode the small gravel roads of this area.
Preparation is everything:

Start riding

Riding the whole day on these gravel roads makes hungry

and thirsty (2 liters of bavarian Bock beer )

Between Gmunden and Wels

This is about 20km north of my hometown, it was a sunday ride on a warm weekend in january. I could not resist and waked my bike up from its winter sleep. The gravel and dirt roads got free of snow only 2 days before.

The fire department of a small village put up a tent and made a little party.

There is also a little MX track, so little that it nice with the LC8.

Some posing at the lake of my home town.

And the final of the first trip in 2011:

Innviertel

Last sunday a friend of mine (Chris) and myself rode the gravel and fire roads of the Innviertel again. It was very muddy and in some places there was still snow. Also the alot of work in the forest is done now, so a lot of stuff is lying around.

For the final we played in the sandbox.
