Odyssey Battery - Impressed

I replaced the original battery on my RT with an Odyssey last year when the bike had about 24,000 miles on it. Instructions said there was no need to put it on a trickle charger during storage. I was skeptical.

Bike sat covered in my garage for the last four months without a trickle charger. I took the cover off today, turned the key, hit the button and the thing started up immediately - as if I rode it yesterday.

Impressive.

I was really impressed too.

I put one in my KLR, after I got my F800 the KLR sat while I attempted to sell it, when I finally got some good hits on it I turned the gas on and it fired up the first try. this after sitting for 5 months, and only being run a couple tims in 11 months.

I would definately buy another

My KLR has a Odyssey battery in it and although I have never let the bike sit idle for the periods of time that both of you have, it has been in the bike for 6+ yrs and has never let me down. I believe it is a fantastic upgrade to the stock vented battery. Living in AZ my KLR stock batteries required diligent attention to water levels. No more worries once I installed the Odyssey.
very good piece of kit.

The luck of the draw, I suppose. I bought four Odysse batteries. Three are great. They hold a charge all winter. One discharges in a couple weeks.

I've had one in my R1100RS, it's now nine years old and still seems fine but I'm replacing it anyway just because nine years is enough to trust any battery.

The batteries are the dogs danglies, used to run them in all my open wheel race cars.

Just so we keep this thread balanced:

I had an Odyssey catastrophically die when it was under a year old (internallly shorted). If not for riding with somebody who could jumpstart my GS with the battery disconnected, I would have been stranded 9 miles out in the desert.

Then to compound matters, they would not honor the warranty because I bought it on the internet (excuse me, my nearest 'dealer' was 100 miles away). They wouldn't return emails and at the time, wouldn't take phone calls either. I got stuck replacing it on my own (not another Odyssey).

I still have that battery here and someday, I'm going to shove it up somebody's ass at that company. They never have a rep at their display at the Long Beach Motorcycle show--ever (I've been looking for three years now). I've got 14 bikes and they'll never sell me another battery again.

If you're ever in their area, give it a toss thru their window after hours. I've never done that, but have wanted to a couple times.

I had bad luck with mine as well.

make sure you don't let it discharge completely or it'll never be the same again.

my car's alarm drained it. afterwards it was never the same again. I've had 'regular' car batteries drain completely and they always recover.

I've put half a dozen in airplanes & all have been flawless & run 6-7 years when the owners replaced them just because.... still working fine.

I have 6 years on one in my hovercraft but I bring it in for the winter. I bring in all my RV & MC batteries & charge them once a month over the winter.

I agree, do not let any battery totally discharge.

I put 5 into service in personal watercraft ( sit downs and stand ups) in early 2006

2 of them failed after 3 years ( parasitic discharge over winter), 2 are still going strong, and one has been in my r1100gs for a couple of years now.

from what I have read, they went down in quality sometime about 6 years ago.
they were $72.50 each when I bought them, and they were a good value for that. but they are now over $100, and I think there are other AGM batteries that offer better value.

Oh come on - you've made it this far. Let's go for a whole decade with one battery.

It was $135 to get a Odyssey for my new (to me) Shportster

So I ordered an "TMS" AGM off Amazon for $48 delivered.

I'll let y'all know how (if?) it works
