India to England by a complete novice.
Right, well here goes.
I've a plan for a trip. It's not much of a plan, and I don't know how this is going to pan out, but I have a cunning plan.
And it's this: Fly to India around March 2012, buy a motorbike (a new enfield) and ride home. Via pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Italy etc... I'm guessing about three months give or take and kidnappings, beheadings or getting married along the way.
I've done a bit of research into this, but I keep coming up with dead ends or just somewhat open ended statements that I can't get any clarification of.
From what I've understood, the only way of reliably getting a bike over there legally is from a chap called Lalli Singh. He sells new Enfields to people who want to do overlanders back to Europe. There are a couple of favourable write ups on here involving him but they all revolve around hiring bikes with him for internal trips. On his website he says:
Travellers doing an overland trip from India to Europe: Lalli Singh offers a major advantage to such travellers, by cutting short all the requisite formalities by buying and registering the bikes, customising the bike in line with the travellers specific needs, complying with the insurance requirements, and getting the necessary documentation done. The documents can then be forwarded to the traveller's country - all this could lead to a saving of 15 to 20 days. At the traveller's end, the documents are received in advance enabling him to fix carnet de passage in his home country. People purchasing bikes for overland Travels cannot register bikes in their names, as they can no more obtain the Carnet.
The reason for using him would be because he does this service with the documents. it would appear that:
According to Indian legislation, only those persons who reside in India and are in possession of proof of their residence - are eligible to purchase and register vehicles in their name.
Foreigners are, however, permitted to purchase vehicles in India for direct exportation abroad through regular "Import Trade Control Policy", but these vehicles may not be registered in India.
So this registration doc's he would send, they would allow me to register a bike in the uk, and then that would give me plates to put on it and ride & Insure it back to britain? Is that correct? I guess i need to email hiom, but does anyone know what the process involves, and what this CPD allows me to do?
I don't understand or know about the process of registering a bike currently in a foreign country with the UK. Obviously I need proper insurance before riding the bike anywhere, especially as soon as i hit Turkey and then onto the EU. But how do you go about transporting a bike through foreign countries and being legal about it? Plus god (allah) knows whats going to happen when I hit the borders with Pakistan and Iran.
Basically, I don't even know the right questions to ask, let alone what I should be asking.
Any help or websites I should have a read of would be appreciated. I've had a search on here over the last few days about these things and I'm still struggling, the notes I've written are a series of scribblings and crossing outs. I've aslo email the RAC, the organisation here which is suppsedly dealing with the Carnet, but haven't had a reply yet. Any help at all would be ossum™!
Thanks in advance
