Took a little ride

2283 miles of ride to be exact.

Had some time off and decided to take a ride from Phoenix to Bend Oregon to see a friend. While I have done thousands of miles throughout AZ this trip was a little out of my comfort zone. My previous longest and most distant ride was about 800 miles through Baja and that was over a week.

Heading out Saturday morning.

Once in California I decided to take Excelsior Mine Road as a cutoff before Baker that connects to Furnace Creek Road.

The road was mostly paved but older so broken in places. There was one spot where the road was washed out and would have made for a very bad incident traveling at night. I spoke to a friend and he said its been that way for a long time, travel with caution if taking this route.

I continued on Furnace Creek road into Death Valley totaling 405 miles the first day. After setting up camp I headed to the steakhouse for a great meal.

The next day was 450 miles with the route beginning through Panamint Valley. Minus 74 ft was not the lowest point achieved but by the time I remembered to take a picture it was the best I could get.

Eventually I hit 395 on the eastern sierra and ran that all the way to Reno and onto Susanville.

I wimped out and stayed in a hotel on the second night.

Day three took me to Bend after about 375 miles. This was the first day of real weather riding through sleet and 40 degree weather, not fun. I had good gear but heated grips and vest would have been nice.

After staying a couple of days in Bend I decided to head back Wednesday as the weather was changing. Trying to avoid rain I left and headed east to Burns and then south into Nevada. The first 300 miles was 38 to 45 degrees with snow flurries on and off, brrrr, so much for avoiding weather. I ended up doing 600 miles that day, a personal best, and made it to Tonopah NV. Right there and then I decided this is as close to an Iron Butt as I will ever get

Thursday it was 500 to Phoenix with the most exciting part crossing the Hoover Bridge in a high wind advisory. It was that or ride an extra 50 miles going through Laughlin which I passed on. Not being one for heights I stayed in the left lane and looked ahead and got through it.

Overall a great trip, the 950 was perfect with no issues.

My little ride....
