Just moved to Baltimore, where are the good roads?

Hey everybody,

So I just drove to Baltimore from Oregon with my KLR in tow and I'm staying on a boat in the inner harbor. I'm loving it so far but I'm not used to living in such a built up area. People tell me there is countryside out here but I haven't seen it yet!

So I thought I would check in with the local ADV'rs to seer where the great biking roads are at.

Thanks for your help!

Oh if it's helpful here's what I like in a road... NOT STRAIGHT, NOT FREEWAY. Hopefully that clears that up.

Welcome to the sprawling megalopolis of Baltimore-DC-Philly. In the inner harbor you're nearly an hour from anywhere that might seem quiet. Fastest bet is north and west; east will take longer and it leads to (dead) flat land eventually. South takes longer, too, though eventually southern Maryland has some nice hidden roads with mild elevation changes. Annapolis is the best small city/ big town in the area IMHO.

Funny, my wife and I are talking about relocating to Oregon - never been, which is what interests us.

Thanks Emerson I keep hearing NW a lot so I guess that's where I will head. It's unreal to me that I have to ride so long on a freeway to get anywhere decent but I guess that's what I get for living in the city now.

If you do decide to move to Oregon I'm sure you'll love it. Tons of wide open space, varied terrain and great roads to enjoy. Plus it's nowhere near as crowded as here. If everything goes right I'll be moving back there in the fall.

For some ideas: www.ridingwv.com

I don't have too much on the Eastern Panhandle yet (which is closest to you), but there is plenty there to see and plenty of good riding.

Safe travels.

Ellicott City will do if you're jonesing for a quick ride somewhere nearby. Its not a lot of riding, but spot New Cut and Bonnie Branch roads on a Google map and you'll be set. Heading north from there to Liberty Reservoir can also take you across some interesting backroads.

Well I didn't know we were suggesting more distant places like WV... Of course WV is the best around! It's almost hard to go wrong out there (unless you get on the interstate).

This area is crowded; I grew up around here and I'm still not used to it. Only areas I've seen that are worse are the NJ-NYC corridor.

Good to know about Oregon. I think it's a real option, though my wife wants to be a California girl for a while, too.

Well California is cool but can be overcrowded too but if you're in the right area you're not far from great riding.

I'll try not to get mugged. I'm broke anyways so mugging me wouldn't yield much. I'm in the inner harbor and it doesn't seem too bad but it's a lot more 'cultural' here than Oregon! I used to live in one of the roughest parts of the UK so I'm pretty good about keeping my wits about me.

yeh I'm with you, I live just south of baltimore since last summer, starting to find good roads now but yeh its hard. I took a ride out to northern VA and WV last weekend found some great roads. I also have a weekend long ride planned out for sometime next month, possibly to do it in like a friday afternoon through sunday evening with some camping in the middle.
