+1 on those bullet style inline filters. I've tried the slightly larger paper type filters on a couple of bikes including the Ducatis I used to own which had low pressure fuel pumps, and the F650 with just gravity feed - not enough flow.
On the R80 and the F650, the bullet style filters work just fine. I get mine at one of the local dealers since lots of motocrossers and dirt riders use lots of them. And I keep a spare on each bike just in case when I'm traveling. But I have yet to have one clog up.

My experience with inline filters are that the bullet /bronze ball style let some of the fine stuff through anyway, and they clog up PDQ if there is much coarse stuff, and the pleated paper are fine on both but the ones I got couldnt cope with a little water in the petrol and virtually stopped flowing as soon as they got wet.
Others may be better, but I dont have the inclination to experiment. So, on balance I would sort the problem first, clean and recoat the tank and use the bullet ones to protect from introduced dirt. And change them as a mojor service item.

a BMW R80G/S rear headlight housing is the back part of the black plastic clamshell that houses the headlight. See where the * is pointing (and yes it looks like a spider) any help with one of these - even a busted one that could be fixable is OK
![]() No reverse needed but thanks...

Sorry Rapid, I thought you were working on a rant about the Alpha ignition.
Actually, I've been having some surging problems on the ST and thought it was fuel starvation, since it tended to happen on the freeway in 5th gear at 75 mph. I went through the fuel system and made sure the petcock screens were clean, float height was set, jets were clean and free, all the usual stuff. Didn't have the problem for a while so I figured that fixed it. It happened again this morning. As it was happening, I thought to myself "gee, this feels a lot like when points and/or a condensor goes bad..." Turning the ignition off and back on appeared to correct the problem. So I called Rick today. He said he hadn't heard of that before, but he's going to send me a new Alpha control unit to see if that solves the problem. If not, then it's probably my ICU going south. ...exactly, Rick is sending me one also, as I have surging and blubbering, and off idle sputtering.
Actually he sent another and it was dead...so I'm waiting. I was told that 'some of the modules were bad'... Likee I said, I'm staying positive...

Seems like they are a little more pricey than stock, but if they last longer then I would go for it.
