Rob like to do it DS style

I've decided I'm gonna start a thread where I can just keep all of the rides that Kim and I do this summer.

First a little background. Last summer she completed her MSF class out at Front Range. Aside from a small tip over, she passed with flying colors:

Kim leading off the bunch

She didn't have a bike (or ATGAT yet), so I started letting her ride my SXV:

Kim moves to the street....

At this point, I decided she really did want to ride, so we got her some gear, and started looking for a bike. As it turns out her dad was selling his Versys, so we picked that up for her:

Kim riding up Left Hand Canyon in Boulder

Although, she liked this bike, it was a bit heavy for her, and she had a hard time building any confidence on it. We decided to sell it and look for something a little smaller. A quick trip to the flea market, and we picked up this beaut for her:

Kim's new moto!

It came with dirt a SM setup too, so I put that on and she's been riding the bike around for about two months on that setup:

Going for a twilight ride

Getting back on the road

Kim's bike decided to take a dirt nap

Kim ridding HW 72

After she started to feel comfortable on her new bike (which she loves), we decided to put the dirt setup back on....

Let's find some dirt!

When I put the dirt setup back on Suzy (Kim names all her vehicles), we also decided to lower it so Kim could actually touch the ground....kinda. I put a Kouba Link on it and dropped the forks as far down as I could. Now it wasn't too tall, or too short, but juuussssst right :

Gold Hill

For our first DS ride, we decided to head up to Switz with our friends Jay and Kelsie. Kim was pretty nervous, as this would be her first time ever on a trail. She repeatedly asked me not to leave her behind....(geez, I guess I just give off that vibe). Anyway, when we first got there, she was pretty timid. That lasted all of 5 minutes, and then this happened:

Kim getting dirty

Kim and Jay on Switzerland trail

She really was impressing me. I mean, I know she's a totally capable rider, but she took to it like a fish to water. I don't have a picture of when she blasted this mud hole, but she went right through the middle of it WFO :

Kelsie breaking in her DRZ

I literally got goose bumps watching her do it. From there on, she started getting faster and faster. We stopped at the end of the Switz trail to rest and mess around on these little hills:

I threw a mean roost off the top of that hill

Me playing on Kim's bike

Jay messing around on Kelsie's DRZ

Once Kim saw Jay and I, she wanted to give it a whirl. I was pretty nervous, but hey, I knew she could do it. I didn't get a picture of her going over it the first time, only this lead in:

Kim played on the hills too, but this was the only picture I got of her

Luckily though, Jay got a video the next go:

(sorry I can't ever seem to get flickr video to embed correctly) I figured out how to embed flickr video

It didn't end pretty, but I was totally blown away that she even wanted to do it in the first place. By the looks if it, it's going to be a great summer.

To be continued (hopefully this weekend)....

Don't tell the girls we stole their bikes

So today, Jay (bodhizafa in inmate speak) and I decided to play hooky and get some riding in up at Left Hand. I got over to his place at 9 and we headed out around 9:45. We took the long way over to LH, and we hit the trail around 10:30. Neither one of us really knows the area, so we just started riding around. We climbed up Firemans hill and rode over the top before taking a look around:

It seemed like we were riding a lot of loops, and it was all pretty technical. I was able to keep a pretty good pace, and we managed to ride quite a few trails in a few hours. There's some pretty fun/challenging single track that I didn't even realize I lived so close to for a long time:

Hmmm, looks pretty rough

Jay working some single track

Anyway, we were just about to head over to the Switzerland trail area and some other stuff Jay said he had on his GPS, when this happened:

That'll buff right out...

It all started at the top of this hill:

I don't know about this Rob...

Jay about to attack a pretty tough section

Jay said something about a steep rocky down hill, and by the time I heard him, I was already in my usual "pin it to win it" mode. I got down and looked back up at Jay. He thought he might take the other way around, but like the good friend I am, I convienced him it wasn't that bad, and even offered an "easy line". He got all the way to the bottom, and fell on the last little drop.

So I rode back home and picked up my truck and came back up to rescue Kelsie's injured stead:

DSC00970

DSC00971

Even though the day was cut short, it was a fun morning. We hit some lunch and Jay stopped and ordered the parts on the way home. He'll have it ready to ride in no time...

Also, it looks like Kim and I are going to try and get a ride in on Saturday. Not sure where we're headed, but if anyone has any suggestions, we're all ears...

My advice is get her a small, easy to ride bike and get her having fun. You have to focus on fun at first. Oh, and matching gear. Matching gear is a must....

It would appear that someone needs a good skidplate with a touch of side protection.

It's hard to say if even a big beefy skid plate like Kim's bike has:

I wish I could look this pretty when I ride

Would have helped much. I think it was just an unlucky fall, but who knows...

Jay sent me another video where Kim actually makes it over the hill. Also, I figured out what the problem was when trying to embed Flickr video....
