Gday Tom, I'm still getting used to it but the screen is better in that it's brighter and seems easier to read. The interface seems a bit simpler but as I said not really using it properly yet. I'm going out on the weekend for a run up the mountains and I'll give a better report then.

The big downside is that it won't run with Mapsource only basecamp which seems to be absolute crap.

Golly, that's a bit odd. I'da thought Garmin would be supporting mapsource forever, but maybe basecamp is their new, "improved", easier to palm-off-on-an-unsuspecting-customer-base effort that saves them money by removing any useful features. Not that I'm cynical or anything............

Looking forward to the good news on Monday then.

Yeah, we have a right to be skeptical, but I'm still keen and have my fingers crossed for the next fortnight

I would warn anyone away from oztopo v3. We have v2 and have given up on it.
Firstly it is laughably inaccurate with many physical features not shown and roads just disappearing into nowhere. They claim detail levels similar to five meeter contours which is a joke. They have just bought someones twenty meter info and extrapolated from there which is totally different. Its just marketing by people who don't use maps in the field.
secondly it was very difficult to use.
we have since bought Garmins Topo Australia and the difference is night and day. Its faster more accurate and simple to use.
I think unfortunately the Oztopo guys are a small company playing in a field with lots of bigger fish and their lack of rescources shows in their product.
We persevered with it for over a year but in the end I should have written them a letter demanding my money back for a totally inadequate product.

Yep, 2.0 was crap, in fact I seem to recall starting a thread with thOse words in the title. 2.1 was better but still lacking IMHO.

I'm willing to give 3.0 a go though because they appear to have listened and have made the upgrades we requested in the main and it does have more smaller tracks.

However, if this version doesn't do everything it's supposed to do I'll give up and use Garmin, as I have been tempted to do in the long months (years) since it was first mooted to be released.

Given your ability to radiate chaos, it could be that version 2.x was just fine until you used it Rossco.

Have you tried the Garmin topo product yet? Just wonderin'.

Tom, you speak the truths. I'm sitting in a Spa in Napier, drunk as a monkey after an afternoon of wine tasting so pay no attention to what I say and I may drop the iPad in the bath before the evenings out.

I haven't tried it, what's your thoughts?

yeah sorry we had version 2.1 and it still sucked. After using the garmin software I actually use it to look things up on the pc instead of maps.
I dont think any company that can be a year overdue with their next big product is ever going to produce any thing worth while.

You have made me envious with your talk of spa's in Napier. It sounds like a good place to be.

I'm just about to load the Garmin topo to my gps, so I'm going to be looking at it with a fresh eye for a while. If it's like oztopo but with routing I'll be pretty happy with it I suspect.

Has Garmin topo been updated?

I seem to remember a lot of people being less than pleased with it when it came out
