Should be picking up my XR650L on Saturday.I am interested in an oil cooler. The bike is new, under warranty, and has the air pump on it.Will the cooler work with the air pump on the engine? Are the mounting brackets raw aluminum ? Thanks,JB

The kit will not work with the smog octopus. All of the brackets/guards are made from aluminum. You are going to love your new bike. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Congratulations!!!! Cheers, Mark

Oh man, I bent-up the artwork. I might need the skid plate to help protect the lower end of the cooler set-up. Either a strong rock flip-up or my light fall to the left side in the woods cuased this.
Mark, should I try to flatten it out or would that weaken it too much?

![]() It should bend back pretty easy without hurting it. You might want to use two wood 2x4s. edit: Drill two holes in one of the boards to make room for the rivet nut inserts on the guard. Put the guard between the two boards and press them together with a vice, a press, or some large c-clamps. Just make sure you don't flatten out the original "kick" in the guard. This should get the guard close to flat again. You might have to do a little tweaking after you get done. The aluminum might have a little "spring" to it. Keep us posted. Cheers, Mark

The cooler is all good. I'll try that to bend it back - pretty much what I was thinking.

Go slow! AL only likes to bend once but not twice. It is more brittle than steel, especially as thick as the guard is and having the one edge rolled to a 90 like it is. Don't ask how I know this.

The last batch of coolers are unpainted and have a bare aluminum finish. I really like the look.
What do you guys and gals think? ![]() ![]() ![]() Cheers, Mark

Mark.......i`ve been doing tests to see how effective the cooler works.....i took it down the highway at 140kph with the bypass turned on,no oil flowing through the cooler........after about 15-20 miles it hit it`s highest temp on my oil temp guage....250 degrees......and climbing ...but slowly.
Now bear in mind it was a cold day......i`ve seen 275 and climbing on this same run in summer on hot days......with the OE tank with the air scoops..... I pulled the bike over, turned the bypass off.........oil now flowing through the cooler.........turned arround immediately and hit the highway back home........220-225 was max...... So 25 degrees or better cooling is really decent......if it was a hot day it wouldn`t get over 250 degrees.......this is also riding the snot out of it,,basically WFO for 20 miles........ ![]() ![]() .....it`s a Honda,it likes it rough![]() B

I installed my cooler last night.
If you follow the instructions (I didn't ) the install will go without a hitch. I cut the oil line short hoping to be able to route it out the left side of the bike. Well.... it didn't work. I ended up following Brian's install and fabed up a custom line for the return hose. A 3/8 inch fuel line custom bent and flared. Piece of cake. It works great!Last night before the custom oil line: ![]() ![]() Today: ![]()

Cool.so you got it done.........looks good Red.......
Just a note to Mark.......i`ve found one thing of real advantage to me after installing the oil cooler, the oil stays golden almost forever,,,,usually it would turn black as coal after a few rides,i just changed the oil with almost 2000 and it`s still almost clear, definately still golden and can see through it........so keeping the oil at cooler temps is at least very good for the oil and not frying the shit out of it.......now i can actually feel safe going the 2k recommended oil change intervals... I`ve dropped the bike a few times, numorous rock gardens.....no problems,,sweet looking/working rig these are..... THANKS MARK..... ![]() ![]() B
