Los Angeles to OKC Late July
Planning a trip in late July from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City. As you can see on the attached map/screen shot, my plan is to shoot NE out of LA through Las Vegas and straight on to the southern edge of Utah and Colorado, then finally dipping back down into my home state through the panhandle.
In order to appease the employment gods (i.e. - limits of vacation time) I have three days on either side of my week with the family to make the trip. That means I need to cover about 500 miles on a day to stick to the schedule. With all that considered, I'm just here fishing for general advise. What not to miss. What precautions to take, etc. I can tell you I am genuinely concerned about crossing the Mojave. Heat and I don't get along. I've got a 3 liter camel pack I'll be sporting on the outside of my mesh suit, and know about hydrating 'more than I think I have to.' I'm considering breaking that part of the ride up into two parts by doing late evening/early morning half-day rides into and out of Vegas. Curious about any biker-friendly camp-sites near the southern Utah/Colorado border, and the same for the border between New Mexico and the far western tip of OK's panhandle. Thanks in advance for your time/advise. |
