BTW, for anyone interested, I have a set of Bassani pipes for an R5. No silencers. Pipes are okay shape; have some rust and a couple of dings. But not horrible shape. Good for that bonkers R5 project (sadly, mine is gone) or if you want to go to jail for too loud of pipes (weekend escape from the wife?).

PM me with an offer. Pretty flexible. Would like to see them scare some neighbors again.

Sure I says, at 10pts a month interest.

I'd like to enlist some help with a rule I'm working on
designed to keep this contest competitive and keep costs down.
something like:

Used parts = +1 point for every dollar under $100
New Parts = -1 point for every dollar over $100

What we're trying to do is make it so this doesn't end up being a contest
to see who can drop the most money into their bike.
Do the $ amounts seem reasonable? Should they be adjusted?
I was thinking the new parts tax maybe should start at $150 or something....

This rule probably needs an exception list too; like tires.


Would appreciate some input.

I've been hoping some others would start similar contests.

Having the new parts tax come into effect at a certain dollar amount
would leave cheap things untaxed, like you said:
WD40, beer, cigarettes.....

Now with raw materials;
neither of us are machinists, we can't weld and we don't have garages...
we'd have to outsource that crap or learn.
I'm thinking machining costs should not fall into the parts tax category,
but should have their own set of rules.
All + points, because machining is too cool.

I see it gets a bit complicated when the participants and bikes are not equal from the start.
BP and I are right on par with each other.
I've had a little motor engine experience, but we're both complete noobs with 2 strokes.
Also, I have very limited knowledge of disc brakes, and BP doesn't know much about drums. So, I took the bike with discs, and he got the drums
Trying to level the playing field as much as possible.



I think adding a weight reduction clause is a good idea for our competition.
Say, 1 point for every lb shaved?


We have also been discussing using WERA or some other vintage racing organization's guidelines for the build.
At least there's the possibility we might actually track race these things.

I've been really mulling over this weight reduction clause.
It's a great idea for sure, but weight reduction is monstrously easy at first
and get's harder and harder as you continue.
We need some sort of exponential formula or something. I think.


Or maybe it would just be easier to say:
1 point for every lb lost up to 50 lbs
then 10 points a lb thereafter.


Someone out there must be a math wiz.

The dump I go to weighs your truck before and after it takes a dump.
I feel like if we went there on a weekday they'd happily weigh the bikes, I mean, all they got to do is read the number after we drive on the scale. Maybe we should each bring a bag of garbage with us

I agree with using the published stock weight as a start.
But somehow it would seem more gratifying to weigh every piece that we remove. Sounds like we'll be going through a couple bathroom scales

Who knows. But right, BP and I are going to get wicked hammered this weekend when I bring his bike down. This will be the first time he sees it and the first time we've been able to get together since we came up with this hair brained scheme.

So yeah.
I really should get this info down before I completely forget it.

Us morons got together last weekend and got stupid drunk
and played with BP's R5. We started out in good stride anyway.
I'm trying to remember what we figured out... Still seized, but a
block of wood and a BFG on the pistons got some movement. Still,
the kick won't budge. Nor could we get it to shift. He is missing the
shifter of course. We tried vice grips, but couldn't get a good purchase
without totally buggering the shaft. We even yanked a shifter off an
80s XS, but it didn't fit - maybe it would, the diameter looked alright,
and if they were both my parts, I woulda smashed it on. But it was BPs
bike and some other guy's shifter. So we left it at that.

Found out his rear brake linings are missing
That was pretty funny. We spent too long trying to adjust the damn
thing before we thought to pull it off and see what's going on in
there. Not a trace.

What else did we do?
We pulled the right side cover. Plastic gears? I've never heard
of such a thing. Did I see 2? To the left and right of the clutch
basket? What is it, like a shear pin?

After that, BP said fuck it and wanted to pull the motor. But then
the pizza showed up and after that the whiskey showed up. And
then I'm really not sure.


The next morning we weighed his bike, and then realized neither
of us had anything to do that day, so hey, let's drive 2 hours and
weigh my bike. Alright. (see above nerd).



And occasionally we remembered to take a picture.

But I can't remember the details and the notes are at BPs house.

No points were awarded this weekend. However, I received $350 from
Mr. BP which means, if he gives me another $50 before 8/23 I won't
receive any interest points.
