Have a good ride, that road was my second favorite road I've found this year,
first being the West-East route from Madras through Ashwood to Twickenham.

AJ: I took a little ride out of Madras today on your "favorite road". I know it's not "Around the Hood" exactly, but thought I'd post a couple pics (sorry I forgot the camera so had to use my android phone):

The Route:

Fall colors along Trout Creek:

View from the Ochoco's ( See it's not all red cinder gravel, ice and guardrails)

John Day River:

Cherry Creek Ranch Area

Old barn on Cherry Creek Ranch. I was told by an old guy that used to run sheep on the ranch that until the metal roof was put on, there were no metal fastenings of any type on the barn.

Pushed it a little too late as there were deer starting to show up everywhere, but caught a nice sunset:

Today's Stats:

The weather was perfect and the roads are in awesome condition.

Excellent figure-eight loop, MadChap . 153 miles, perfect for a nice long day trip out there

That was just my favorite road, then, in February when I rode it.
But, I finally just had to start calling them all..... "one of my favorites"

I finally got to ride Trout Creek to Ashwood, in mid-September. What a hoot !! Something like 6-8 small creek crossings?? I lost count .
Then I re-rode East to Cherry Creek through Donnybrook and Horse Heaven. Sweet, again.
I found the road North to old Bagwan-ville on Muddy Ranch Rd this time, just about a mile West of the Cherry Creek homestead and shop/barn complex. That was rough and dusty excellence. I grew up in Wasco County, and was in High School during the Bagwan's reign, and this was my first trip over to see the Muddy Ranch. It has changed a little bit since the "Young Life" group has been fixing it up a bit lately.

Yep,.... still on the list of favorites. ALL of 'em. I like the beautiful mix of plenty of Junipers and plenty of wide open canyons & hills. And, of course, I REALLY like the "see no people" thing out there. A great route for a solo therapy ride

But, I still have not ridden from Cherry Creek down through Painted Hills (never yet even seen the Painted Hills Nat Monument ), last February, I cut East to Twickenham. Nor have I ridden Donnybrook North towards Antelope, nor Ashwood North towards Willowdale. Unfinished business .

The subject came up on our Saturday ride, how the roads and weather there, will likely stay good for a month longer than the roads and weather around here,.....So, I think I've got to get another ride in over that way......

I'll make sure you know when, MadChap. I'd like to ride it with you.
Slow Joe,...are you listening ????

I'm here

I'm in, but I do have to warn you that the clay out there can make the Abbott slip clay look NICE. It just sticks to your tires and builds up. Packs up between the front tire and forks. Riding with a front tire that doesn't turn can get old in a hurry. Was out riding powerlines the other day thinking about a loop for you guys. I have some pretty good ideas, nice dual sport roads a little bit of technical stuff, you name it.

Fun for all

I won't take you anywhere a crappy rider on a stock KLR can't go.

I bet it's PERFECT out there right now. No dust, high traction.

Are you thinking there is any fun, bone jarring, off road ripping to be done?
I wonder if a fat man on a little 250 could keep up...

Would you ride it with street tires?

Nasty?

How rough it gets depends on what people want to do. I still have OE Tires on my KLR so I am limited on traction also, unless it rains quite a bit you should be ok. If someone or there machine has limitations we will ride accorddingly

My dad told me of driving a team in about that area. He had to carry an axe on the wagon, and stop frequently to chop the mud from the wheels when they got so heavy the horses could no longer pull the load.

(Hey AJ, this one is not a joke.)

This weekend

I have been pardoned on the domestic front and no rain on the 10 day forecast. So Saturday? Jeff will you be solo or will Shelly come?

So give me an idea what day works and who wants to join in.

Last Saturday, she wanted to ride too, so that was good......

But next Saturday ALSO ??.....Hmmmm, I gotta find a way for her to wanna go, too, if it's gonna work for me.

You got any weekdays available??
I can swing one of those here and there.

I'd ride any of the Ranch roads that I've ridden before on street tires if it was dry.
But I dunno what "Joe-who's-not-slow" has got up his sleeve for us...

BTW, Mr. F, do you still have Fridays off, or do I remember that wrong?

You coming, too, Mort ? There's no ice on the Hwy 26 Pass, yet
And, you already have at least one stud on your back tire, anyway.

These are great and fast 950-able dirt roads, I'm guessing it's a bit far to wanna slab the XR,
and I can bring a small hatchet for your wagon wheels, if they mud up

She don't normally do "girl stuff", especially if it's suggested that she do it
I gotta approach Saturday carefully

Power don't matter so much out there, on the dirty roads.
Power is usually at a dis-advantage, trying to hang on to the road. Sure is FUN, tho
