Is there need for heat insulation for front cylinder exhaust, like OEM tank has?

I do not think so, but for sure it is good to insulate where the fan is blowing, as mine are white and I can see fuel boiling and bubbling because of the very hot air blowing on it.

Hi Miles

I've got over 50,000 miles on the set of Safari's I put on my 990 in
'08.
I did put some insulation on them when new.

Here, ready to roll with reformed SW Motec crash bars.

In distant lands.

Twist it, Max

Where did you find the flat black rear body panels? Did you paint the stock pieces? I don't think they were that color..but could be wrong. I've been thinking of ordering a set of rear body panels when I get my Safari tanks and saving the original orange w/gold metal fleck tanks/body panels.

Dupli Color pickup bedliner with clear acrylic over.

I use it on my skid plates, foot peg brackets, body panels, crash bars.
The frame on my KTM 300.
The 990's wind screen and glove box cover.

UPDATE:

I only get about 330-350 miles range.
Fuel light comes on at 300-320-ish.
Akrapovics and remap likely don't help that a bit.
But that is enough range to get the job done, and not have to make any route changes, just to get fuel.

I still LOVE them after all this Summer and about 13k miles.
They take a truly bad beating on my bike, I USE this bike hard, with no crash bars.
Don't feel I need 'em.

Anyone wanna buy my stock '07 ADV orange tanks ????

some do, some don't. The larger they are the shorter time they'll stick.

I wouldn't waste time or money on "dressing" them up.

Can these be painted, or is that generally a bad idea?

The black ones yes.

The translucent and Orange no.

This paint job on my translucent ones lasted exactly one week.

It was an expensive lesson.

It all peeled off and this is what is left;

I kind of like it better this way.

Interesting.... I've never heard, or seen a set of BLACK tanks painted.

Any pics of this or links to those that have.
