Audi Quattro.

Skool me. Going to pic up a Canadian model 1990 Audi Quattro in the morning. Been parked for about 3 years, batterys dead, kinda high miles, but its in great looking shape. It hadnt been used a whole lot for the 3 or so years preceding its being parked next to the barn, so its been sitting a while. Apparently it would tend to get "warm" on hot days with the a/c on. Its got the v8 and all wheel drive.

Anything in particular to watch for? Ideas on the overheating issue? Good car? Bad car? Idea on the kind of mileage I can expect from a 3.6l v8?

I must say, I'm diggin the headlight windshield wipers and the built in 1990's BRICK cell phone!!!

Congrats! Any parts may be pricey, but some might be chilling in boneyards.

My Cherokee had the same problem at first with overheating. I went through it and replace the radiator, t-stat and some other parts. Still overheated. Come to find out, it had a pinhole in one of the hoses. Problem fixed. Now when I do a radiator swap, I change the hoses too.

Look up Audi UFO brakes. I believe it has them. They're unusual. Like perimeter brakes on motorcycles. The caliper is inside the rotor. Oh yeah, It's a 1990 Audi that's been sitting, you're probably fucked. Is it free?

Like most Audi's of the era they had electrical issues. Nice cars otherwise.

Head on over to vwvortex.com and read up on the V8 Audis.

I think you're going to be in for some costly repair bills. I've given up on the old German cars, I can fix anything on them, but they need repairing often and the price for parts is high!

The price of parts is high and the labor is usually a lot higher. I'm an Audi owner and I'm always completely baffled when I have to make a repair and its just crazy what you have to go through do replace a part that would be relatively simple on just about any other car. Case in point I just had to replace an alternator. Step 1. remove the entire front on the car. Step 2. remove alternator.

Most likely you will encounter electrical problems. Most are caused by bad connections caused by corrosion. This is especially true for the ECU units that are mounted under the drivers seat. Before replacing anything consider opening up the unit (ts simple) and cleaning up all the contacts and seeing if that fixes the problem.

Problem is that anything from the 90s is expensive or hard to fix since parts don't always exist. My toyota t100 needed a powersteering hard line that sold for $640. It is a hard line about 2-3 feet long. Fuuuuuck.

I went to a hydrolic shop and had them put one together.

Moral of the story is that sometimes you can get creative and sometimes you need to pay up. I think i would pass. Being Canadian, im sure it must have some rust. And sitting like that didn't do it any favors.

Geez DP, will the weird and unusual vehicles never end with you?We also own an Audi, good luck with the electrical issues. Our sunroof opens up on it's own, left turn signal stops working on it's own, a mile of hard brittle plastic tubes that act as vacumn lines for everything, plastic heater core. It's a great car otherwise. 187K on it, so some repairs are expected. Feels alot more solid than the Accord or Cavalier my kids own. Check out Audi Techworld. I also think an inmate is an Audi Tech. Here's how to remove the heater core on our '95 A6, about 1 1/2hrs. An yes, I replaced all the hoses while I was there. Later one requires removing the dash and a/c evaporator. BTW, I've had to replace the pos ignition switch twice already and it was recalled for that before we bought it as well, so this is the fourth one in there.

Its free... No visual rust, and I'm pretty handy. Just wondering about common issues to look out for.

Remember, if the women dont find you handsome, at least they'll find you handy!

Well, its technically free... With the understanding that when we sell it we split the profit (if any) with him.

It's an Audi.

There won't be any profit. What this saga really needs is a case of budweiser and photos of the fight when everything goes wrong.

But if it makes you feel better, you can still split the loss.
