The Last G/S (US Model) .... Redux!

This photo was taken last summer when I bought it. The P.O beat on it pretty good. It had taken a hit hard enough to break off the steering stop and crack the left cylinder, thence chewing a piston crown.

I thought this particular bike deserved a little love, so I've since taken it down for a major refresh, if short of a frame off.

Anton installed a new piston and jug, plus the circlip mod and 1-5 gear swap. I did the Omega kit and ND starter. Put an Ohlins on there, and the forks are off for a Racetech Gold Valve job. Subframe, pannier racks, rear rack, handlebars and various bits are at the powdercoaters now. Painted parts are at my ace custom shop, where all the OEM decals will be replicated in paint under clear coat. That'll include the original tank you see here plus a PD tank. Also sourced a solo seat/rack and an OEM windscreen. A full stainless exhaust system just arrived from Motobins.

It's going to be great to see this old gal emerge again, and I hope she can hold her own as a little bit of history, alongside the fine looking G/S's I've seen here.

To be continued...

And here she is now, with the previously noted goodies, plus a Stefanie Meyers bash plate and a TT top clamp installed. I have to say the paint work is gorgeous, with the custom graphics under clear coat, and having the headlight shell color pick up the red in the tank and side covers really make the front end pop. Yes, I kept the OEM tank, which from the sales literature I've seen may be unique to the two 87 G/S units (anyone know if the ST's or CS models shared this design?):

Riding this bike back-to-back with its 100PD big brother makes you appreciate how light and agile the G/S is, about the same comparison as between the 100PD and an oilhead GS.

African R 80G/S

This my work in progress. VIN 1173 from 12/80. First registration in 01.01.1981 in Johannesburg.
As far as I know, the 80G/S series started at VIN 6250001 from 05/80.
The frame was strengthened, swingarm 100mm extended, strengthened rear frame and a few other mods. I am waiting for my 48mm forks to go in soon.

It's quite a while since I posted on here, I'm afraid. Anhyow, I'm back and thought I should show my G/S.
Here's my 1981 G/S No 4878. Pictured on the day I bought it two years ago. A running redurbishment. It now has new rims and spokes, sorted gearbox ( expensive, but now very sweet for a BM) and new bearings in the bevel drive unit, etc, etc. Paint job due next.

After just a few months of ownership I was feeling the G/S was probably my favourite bike both to ride and own.

Recently I've moved to live in a more rural part of the country and now I regard the G/S as just awesome. I'd thought, crossing continents and alpine adventures were the situations where the G/S wouldd really impress. I now find it's perfect for our fenland roads, which are subject to extreme and sudden subsidence. Humps and bumps, huge cracks and weird cambers appear. I'd promised myself I'd be gentle with this machine, respectful of its age, etc, but I can't help getting a little air-time now and again. Though I am trying to be careful, it's a long time since I owned a lively XT600 and the BM is a touch heavier.

I have an '83 and thought my kick-starter was off kilter as well. We pulled the tranny and thought we could adjust the angle of it, but to no avail. You learn to live with it.

I guess I get to sign in here as well. Could someone please explain to me how to kick start the bike? Is it ignition on and then push it down, or is there more to it? Vin 6286638

Solo, by the way. you were the one that first alerted me, R80G/S was the bike for RTW duties.
looks like I'm #5 right after yours for now ... pretty early bike

stamped on frame.. #2141 R80 G/S ... production date 12/80 ... a bit confused on when production started for G/S some say June 80 other say Sept 80???

history of mine is ... PO paid for frame off restoration, then ended up not riding G/S (rings are not broken in yet). He purchased from original owner who installed factory PD kit. appears I'm the third owner.

amazing amount of detail went into this restoration!
