3 days 1200km Xmas Ride Vfr800

1200km over 3 Days, Since My parents took my daughter to My brother’s house in Northern NSW for xmas, but i had to work, i finished work at 5am, 14 hours of work overnight, got a few hours sleep, got up about 12, and packed the bike, tried to decide, leather, lace or plastic, I eventually went leather. leaving Glen Innes at about 1pm Xmas Eve. Powered up to Tenterfield on my Vfr800, I hit the Bruxner, it rained when i got to Tnterfield, wet weather gear goes on, over the top of wet leather, 30 minutes later, the sun comes out and the roads try, i get hot and humid, stop, rain gear comes off, ride for 30 minutes, and again, its raining, this routine lasted half a dozen times, the Bruxner was good, bit wet and a lot of slow moving cars. Lots of nice corners and they have finished roadwork’s of the Tabulum bridge, so there’s no more closures during the day. I Just powered on through it in a hurry to get somewhere. I had my Ipod on, which skipped from Sophie Elise Bexter, Vanilla Ice, an Audio book chapter or two of Zen and the Art of motorcycle Maintenance and even a few tracks of meditation music such as rainforest sounds and relaxation music by Mozart,

I got to the other side of the Bruxner and since I hadn’t eaten today, well not since I ate peanuts at 3am. I stopped at sloppy macca’s for a burger and a drink on the go, then it started, heavy rain, so on went the wet weather gear, it rained heavily all the way through to the highway, through Lismore, to the pacific highway, then up the highway and it started to dry out, so rain gear off now. A an hour or so north and I took the old pacific highway through a section known as Burringbah, it use to be littered with fixed speed cameras, but still has a few now, lots of nice twisty bends, very little traffic, but during this time of year, I have to keep the speedo in check, double demerits and operation slow down/tortoise.
I’m testing out a few new things on the bike, a Spot Connect GPS tracker, Messenger and Emergency EPHERB and a new Rjays Tourtech TSS helmet, emergency 1l Burton Fuel Bottle And a fancy Flytouch 10” android tablet pc with a keyboard case, a mini netbook complete with car charger charging off the bike in my top box.

Arrived about 6pm to tea being dished up of home made hamburgers. I’m totally exhausted, but enjoy the family thing with all my family in the one house, nieces, nephews. Then we set up the Christmas presents, milk and cookies for Santa, , Then I get to lay my sleeping bag out on the lounge and try to sleep in the hot humidity of the gold coast.

I’m told its 5.30am when my daughter age 4, and my Niece 6 wakes me up as I’m under the xmas tree. The others slowly get up and we commence the unwrapping with lots of squealing, with many a toys, which I help set up, and play with such as daughters new Scooter, and neices new Bike, I carefully observe that a small cow, a calf is walking past the house wearing a pair of reign dear antlers and a cow bell around its neck covered in tinsel. Lots of Snacks are presented and eventually a beautiful Christmas lunch of one heck of a large Turkey, with ham, beef, salads, which go down well, it’s a hot day today and one of the presents, a bubble blowing sprinkler gets used in the front yard. Eventually I lay down on the lounge after lunch, and I dono, it suddenly becomes 5pm and I’m told to wake up for dinner, which is left overs with some yummy cherry cake and custard. Everybody is exhausted, but the problem with sleeping in the lounge room is you can only go to bed, when the last person goes to bed.
I wake up about 8am, but decide to stay in the sleeping bag, I had organized a riding buddy matt to come with me at 9.30, then all of a sudden my dad shakes me saying a bike just pulled up, he’s early, um no its 9.30 I’ve fallen asleep again. Doh. I quickly load the bike up again and get ready, giving matt the introductions of my family. Shortly afterwards we are on the way, We head off to Murwillumbah to fuel up, and eventually wind our way down through Kyogal, through some great roads, some sections are great, others are very bumpy, a few times I’ve run wide, due to bumps and have had to get off gas unsettling the bike significantly to dodge large swallow your tire pot holes. Bit bumpy but it’s a great section, if only it was in better condition, not much traffic around, but there are a few lets do half the speed limit 4x4s on the road. We get to Kyogal and its about 33 degrees, I’m hot in leather, and decide to get a drink in Kyogal. We head off, and in 30 minutes were in Casino, the last major town, fueling up as I figured all the small servo type cafes will be closed, being boxing day. We eat some Macca’s again, and have a good laugh, he brings his girlfriends Xmas cake which is great.

We hit the Bruxner, and were going great guns, some great corners, I’ve got the knee down and pegs down on several great hair pins, traffics light, with only short delays until overtaking opportunities present themselves. Matt has a great time, and we decide to have a break at Tabulum, a aboriginal mission, in the middle of the Bruxner, the servos, closed, probably murdered during the night, but I have a few drinks in my top box for us, the local copper rocks up in a land bruiser and stairs at us, no trouble here. I lose my ear plugs which are on a tethered, no idea where they went though. On our way to a great leg of the Bruxner, great hair pins, great road surfaces, nice dry roads. We really get the bikes going but still keeping an eye on the speedo. We get to Tenterfield about 3pm were we part our ways, he heads off north through Cunningham’s gap and I head off south, with dark clouds looming.

I get home to 3 hungry cats about 5pm, 1200km later, and unload the bike and start the washing ready for work at 7am the next morning.
