Boxing day blat, back of the Gold Coast, solo on a Yamaha DT230

After some major reworks to the carby, reeds, air box, muffler, chamber, etc. etc, it was time to take the little Yamaha DT230 for a quick spin. A couple of hundred km's later, the DT with its traction control system which is really a retardant, just continues to surprise.

Past Mt Elliott and the little Blue smoker just shines on this type of open gravel road and I had it all to myself....no cars, bikes or dust, just me and dirty great tyre shredding skids.

With the high gearing I put on the DT, sixth gear power band doesn't come in until 120 kph, I reckon I could do close to 160 kph down this section and still have plenty in reserve.

And on the trip home had to negotiate this crap down the other side of Ormeau, going down isn't too bad, coming up is just shite, Nearly 200kms in a couple of hours, most of that up on the pegs with a fistful of throttle and steering the bike with the rear wheel. The little DT continues to surprise the hell out of me, there is not one hint of hunting that all two strokes are famous for particularly on transport sections. I reckon Yamaha just about got it right with the 2 stroke DT230. I'm lovin it and intend to adventurize it some more, particularly with additional fuel.

Rear tank is 8 ltr which I get around 110 km from and if i take it easy i can get 130. Front tank is 11.5 ltr plus i can a 5 ltr jerry in the back pack to get me where i want to go.

You're going almost 160KPH (100 MPH) on a 230 and still had plenty in reserve? That's pretty amazing.

I think they do 165kph with stock gearing - I had mine up to 160kph pretty easily,but that last 5kph would take a bit longer to get there. These bikes really hit above their weight, a lot of motor in a small frame (chassis and body parts are the same as the DT125. I got mine thinking I'd have a road legal dirt bike to do stuff my XT600 was a pig in - what I got was a bike far better than I thought, it out performed the XT600 everywhere. I wish I still had mine, I wasn't finished with it yet, but I haven't got the money or room to just keep buying bikes and keeping the old ones. Best dual purpose bike ever I reckon.
