Today, our route

would be a surprise to me. Ron and Dave had picked a different way of getting to Hinton that they had done before and promised great riding and views. Then we'd have no choice but pavement west to Jasper, and then down the Icefields Parkway where we'd camp. Somewhere.

We'd be gaining some altitude, but the big mountains would be all around us.

Leather tassels.

Admit it. You're jealous already.
Mesmerizing, those tassels were.

Our first view of the Rockies:

We turned onto a secondary (teriary?) dirt road... here's a taste of the riding:

It was a little concerning to see how well the warning signs were maintained:

It was some sweet riding,

there were hills,

curves,

and between the fabulous weather, the tassels,

good music on the iPod, , and the early fall foliage,

it was shaping up to be a banner day.

This was range road 235A

or Cardinal River Rd. depending on the map. And it would seem that not everyone was as fortunate as we were.

It was kind of jarring to see this level of squalor,

out here. I wasn't anticipating this. A sobering reminder of how lucky we are.

Just as quickly

we were immersed back into the natural beauty of foothills, heading towards the Rockies to the west

We crossed the Cardinal River,

stopped to feed the Monkey,

and continued looping west and then north towards Hinton.

you should have taken the front fender off and gone with some 4 inch risers if you were really serious.

I'm way ahead of you... already running these for the monkey to swing on.

Gonna have to think about the fender. You may be onto something.

Nah, it might allow mud to spatter on the tassels.

Scott, you gonna make it down to the big city for the IMS this year?

I stopped to take a pitcher

It was becoming apparent that clouds were building on the backside of the Rockies -- hopefully it would be clear once we got to the Icefields Parkway -- we'd be sleeping at altitude tonight, and being wet didn't sound like fun.

While I was taking the above photo, LDF, Ron & Dave had stopped a little ways ahead where the road crested through a pass and revealed an expansive vista below:

I rolled up, and found a gaggle of paparazzi waiting:

Of course, I made everyone wait for me while I set up a nice pano with the Leica.

If you want to get really crazy, click on the above photo and it'll open a new window, click that image to zoom to full size. Scroll around and enjoy. Took a whole day to stitch it right. With photography, like riding: I'm not that good, but I'm slow.

Our trusty steeds waiting:

Thanks, guys for taking us to this very special place.

And here's the ride down from the pass:

with some commentary contrasting this kind of terrain from what we'd been riding up in AK, YT, and NWT. It was promising to be a super Mobius for sure.

We were running well together

We'd spread out, but were all evenly paced.

Nothing too challenging in terms of road surface, but the views were sensational.

Soon we were cresting another high point,

and the wind picked up, the clouds closed in, and we could feel a chill in the air.

gratuitous fringe shot:

Direction we're headed:

off into the beyond

I really need to figure this out. I just can't come to grips with driving up the dark cold palisades that time of nite after leaving that warm ultimate abode you call home.
