FYI --- Ned: Check your gear in the AM, just heard that Casteau was bit in the face by a spider that had crawled into his gear. They initially thought he hit a bee while riding.

I rarely write in this thread or the firehose thread as i cannot add to the depth of knowledge and or experience that you guys and gals have. I simply lurk, willing all the boys on and soaking in all the information. Over the last few years Advrider has made me feel as close as possible to the action with out actually been there.
Like i said i rarely write here but i have just listened to the Ned/Nate interview and i feel i have to add to the thread to simply thank you both for bring Dakar 2012 literally into the living room. It is gonna be a bitch to get the fesh fesh out the rug!
Firstly i am stunned that Ned has the time to even think about calling in. I can only imagine what must be going through head and still he has time for twenty two minutes.
I do not know Ned, other than following his threads here, but i am amazed at how modest he is. During the interview he had every opportunity to tell us all that he repast some bikes that passed him earlier in the stage. He simply implied it and stated that you do not need just a big motor. For a guy that must still be a little amped after his first Dakar stage he was so calm.
Also Packmule, your interviewing was amazing; so calm and let the man do all the talking!
If only the domestic US coverage to have an ounce of your class.

Neil (Bluebull) did a good writeup in the firehose thread of how this works. It's funny... if you are lucky to have no troubles on a given day, and just get to have a clean ride, at your own pace, you actually have a little bit of breathing room--finishing before dark, time for shower, eat, attend briefing, make a call, eat, mark roadbook, sleep. It's not crazy tough.

But, and this is a big BUT, once the first teensie little thing falls out of place, you are behind the eight ball. Suddenly you are tired, finishing at/after dark, missing the briefing, etc, etc.

I distinctly remember a day (8?) on the Sertoes last year when Neil and Phil both came in well after dark. In the meantime, I enjoyed a shower, massage, and a shave by the cute Gillette girls. They were a wreck. But it's just luck. It wasn't a fast day for me, just a clean day. And they had problem after problem. It plays hell on the nerves.

So far, Ned is doing well on this front. If he rides a bit on the conservative side, as it appears he is, and avoids all manner of problems, and is lucky to boot on mechanical stuff, then he just might stay on top of things.

And I hope he does!!!

Also, like somebody said... Ned has something that the Pro's don't have, and that is all of us on Adv supporting him! That in itself is an amazing thing, and I am constantly in AWE of what we have here. Wish I had this back when I rode Hodakas
