Kansas Gravel North of Lawrence
Kansas gets a bum rap sometimes for being flat. Well it really isn't flat. NE Ks in particular. There's some great riding, not the typical section road type, north of Lawrence in the Kaw watershed. Here's a little experiment with my new Go Pro camera exploring roads with names like Buck Creek and Wildhorse. Buck Creek was main road back in Civil War days from Oskalossa to Lawrence.
I'm on a mostly stock 89 NX with Bridgestone dual sport tires. I'm thinking about some mods and turning this bike into a mount specific for gravel. On to the camera. These things are amazing. I'm shooting at the lowest resolution and 60fps. Check out the dog shots I slowed down. Next experiment is shooting at 120fps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8FV-U7vJlc jgrooms screwed with this post 12-23-2011 at 03:50 PM Reason: Typo |

Love the slow-mo puppy shots. Yes, I wonder how the first one begets 3 legs? Hummm!

They actually have 35 mph speed limit signs on a gravel road?

The state law is 55 mph unless posted otherwise. Where there are clusters of housing, you'll often see the 35mph. An exception is Johnson County, which comprises large suburb to KC, 35 is limit and posted.
78,000 miles, 56% of the roads, in KS are gravel. |

I've always heard and considered that Kansas was a flat place to ride so it's nice to see the video and read the other comments. When I ride through there next year I'll have to check it out. I did laugh at the clips of the dogs and thought back that it had been some time since I had had a dog chase me while riding. Of course, on my next ride I had three dogs run out beside me on a road I ride pretty regularly... and where I have never seen a dog. Go figure.

Just curious, but was wondering what the camping would be like in the areas shown and in similar KS areas? Seems like most of it is private land.

You can find camping all over the state anywhere from Corp of Engineer Lake to county fishing lakes to city parks.

Yes on the above, and the Corp of Engineer are usually on the same lakes where there is a state park. |
