Peterhansel won 6 Dakar events on a motorcycle in the 90's, he's well versed in racing both cars and bikes. That "hit" was merely a nudge at idling speed while crossing a quickly flowing, and deep, river. It could have been a poor calculation of where his fender ended, a result of water unweighting the car and forcing him down stream a bit, or trying to make the exit point without hitting the bank. I guarantee it wasn't a purposeful act.
I've met the man...he's a compassionate person. Whether it was his idea, or that of the ASO, an apology seems like the proper conclusion to an unfortunate situation. I agree with Tim, it's not safe for bikes and four wheeled vehicles to race together. Unfortunately it's an inherent risk you assume when competing in an event like this one. |

![]() We beat Ned to Ariica by two hours so we're chilling at a restaurant on the beach. Corona tastes good after our "hard day" ![]() I see Ned finished the special ![]() Ten down and four to go Tonight we do our customs, etc in the bivouac as we cross into Peru tomorrow. Given its a long day today anf Ned has a 250 km liasson to the camp it will likely be a late night tonight. Goi!!! Ned Go!!!

Each stage has three parts. A liasion, the special, and then another liason to the bivouac. Only the special is timed.

How long is the special compared..100km and up..?..depending on the day..? I have seen many guys complain about terrain in the Berkshires around here.. I couldn't imagine racing and just riding for that many days..!!. Just Amazing.. |

Let's not turn this into a language war.

Hey Ted, during the Peru Marathon stage, you guys will have a "day off". Don't forget to try the Pisco Sours, you may give up the cervezas.

Sorry to be ignorant . . .
. . . but can someone tell me briefly what a "marathon" stage means? It sounds like riders are on their own for maintenance - ? but when? During the day? Overnight? Would love to know the game plan . . . Thanks.
