Could someone explain how scoring works between different categories in the same class?

The news broadcasts seem to imply that all cars compete against each other - the same for trucks. Yet, in cars class, there is the Improved and Production category, as well as Open. (By the way, where does the Hummer Buggy fit?)

Is there one winner in each class, or are there separate winners in each subcategory? What category are the main competitors, the Minis, Toyotas and the now-departed Tuaregs?

I've been trying to follow it but I only get it on NBC Sports channel at 1:30am. The bike class is limited to 450cc so there are no beemers.

The BMW G450 was entered until last year, but the bike has been discontinued; it lives on in the Husqvarnas.

No penalties! Only if the guy on the bike was french and the driver was a different nationality. Thats the only way to get penalties. I think I read this in the rules. Seems like this race is by the french for the french. Poor guy on the bike.

The marathon stage means that the riders will bivouac away from their teams and will only get a truck a la the Malles Motos competitors. All service/repairs performed by the riders themselves. DSS = Start of the special stage
SS = Special stage
ASS = Finish of the special stage

Someone can help me with the french acronym.

Special stage are where the racing happens. The liasons link stages to the bivouacs and have to be done in a maximum time (normally the time needed for travelling at a reasonable law-abiding pace from A to B). Its not timed but you have to do it within the maximum time, and this is also the most overlooked part of any rally. Peopel focus on the specials, but its the liaisons on the longer rallies that really wear riders out because theyre sometimes hundreds of km. On this rally the liaisons aren't too bad.

As for the others - They come off the official FIM lexicon which has all the comes you will find in a road book on which the guys have to navigate:
