Hello all. I just sold my Country and replaced it with a Challenge. The Challenge has a bad right peg and was wondering if anyone has personal experience with the Pivot Pegs. I need pegs for sure, but was wondering if the Pivot is the way to go. They seem to be within $40 of the other replacements. Pros? Cons? Thanks.
Not normally one for superstition but we had a nightmare on Friday (13th). 2 miles from home I glanced down to see the oil light flash on. Pushing the bike home a neighbour stopped to give me a lift. I hooked the trailer up to the landrover and went to start it - battery flat. After 30 minutes on charge I got it started to find the pipe to the silencer had rusted through. I retrieved the bike and went to work thinking that would be it but my wife came home with her car door handle in her handbag. Arghhhh. I got to work on the bike today and it is not looking good, although it could have been much worse had I not seen the light come on or taken a chance that it was an electrical issue. Unfortunately I have no oil pressure to the engine. Judging by the fact that the oil tank is also full to the brim, my best guess is the engine oil pump has failed leaving the engine without oil and allowing the scavenger pump to pump all the oil to the tank. Having checked the manual this shouldn't be too major a job as the oil pumps are accessed behind the clutch. It could well be the plastic drive gear has failed as this would seem to be a weak point; if so they will all be replaced. Not having a clutch holding tool, and being up to my eyes in it with other stuff, I am going to hand it to the local dealer this time. I guess my shock is going to have to keep on squeaking for a few more months.
I read posts from others on this site that you should throw those valves away and buy the Pingles, so that's what I almost did. I have brand new, unused valves that came with my new TT tank because I put the Pingles on from the start. You will need: 2-Adapter Plates, PT# A1602C 1-Power Flo Valve PT# 2210-AH 1-Power Flo Valve PT# 4210-AH If you order, confirm your own part numbers! I am old, drink lots of beer, have no memory capacity and am not responsible! Pingles have 5/16" outlets, so I ran 5/16 fuel injection hose. No reserve on this particular Pingle Valve, just on/off. Suits me fine cause my TT Tank feeds the top of the stock tank through the top vent port. (Guts removed.) The low fuel indicator works as usual. If you want to use the strainer screens that come with the Pingles, you have to drill out the existing center hole, (about 7/16" diameter from the factory), for each side fuel valve mount to about 9/16". This is what I did with my cordless drill and a stubby step drill bit, then I finished it off with a 9/16" drill bit in my hand. THERE IS ONLY ABOUT AN INCH OF CLEARANCE TO WORK WITH INSIDE THAT HOLE, AND YOU DO NOT WANT TO DRILL THROUGH THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUR TANK! (No I didn't!) New tanks are around $800 for the complete kit. I don't know if they sell just the tank. Your looking at about $220 dollar US for the Pingle parts plus shipping. If you or anyone else is interested in my new TT valves that came with the tank, PM me and maybe we can work a deal. They aren't doing me any good. I will try to attach a picture on the Pingle on my tank. Here's the Pingle website again: http://www.pingelonline.com/fuel_valves.htm
I have them and like them, but it is really a matter of personal taste. Some people hate them and think they feel weird. For me they are more comfortable and allow easier access to the shifter with boots on. I got used to the weird feeling of movement. It's hard to know if you'll like them or not without trying them.
On mine, the temp light flashes VERY briefly to let you know that the LED is OK but it doesn't stay on....that's normal. Mike
AugustWest, I will give you my $.02.. You can solve the fuel issue cheaper than a TT tank. I found an add on tank that fits over where the charcoal canister used to be, over in the flea market.. If you can't find that, get a rotopack.. I used that for the first year, it's fine, just not as convienient. I had to replace the air shock, mine leaked, I went thru 3 air pumps before I found one that would work. It eventually ticked me off so bad, I caved and bought a Ohlins. The airshock worked fine, when it worked. If you have one that holds pressure, and you have long enough legs to deal with it when it goes to full extension, I'd stay with it.. As far as the front suspension is concerned, I guess I'm just not a good enough rider to know how bad it is. It seems to me that it would be a budget buster to swap out front forks. So I just ride in blissful ignorance, thinking the front end is ok. The seat sucks, but I threw a sheep skin on it, and stand up a lot anyway. (on the gravel..) I found a used tank bag (wolfman) and a used set of rear bags and frames (dirtbagz). (TT Rear rack the large one.) I had to have risers, I'm 6'5", and standing up so much was killing my back, not just because of the crappy seat. Ha I also was lucky the PO of my XC had added an after market skid plate, I would have done that right away.. I also got an inexpensive windshield from The Jester. (his posts are above). It works fine for me. I still catch some air, but it is much improved over the original configuration.. I lucked out and found a used TT beak extender. I was almost to the point of making something out of plastic and hanging it on the front. Otherwise you get covered with road dirt, mud, gravel etc, every time it gets wet. Oh, I added heated grips. I'd do that again. I've used them a bunch.. And, has been mentioned, change out the shift lever. I dropped mine on the left side a time or two, and each time I held my breath untill I determined it was ok. Now I just unbend the cheap one, and have a spare in the bottom of a bag in case I unbend the cheap one one too many times.. I went cheap.. There's lots of XCs that look fantastic, they may even have the air protection and comfort of a big GS, I just didn't want to drop that much $$$$. (plus, as I mentioned before, I am not that good of a rider, I crash a lot, the last thing I wanted to do is buy all the add- ons a second time, ha!) By the way, I love this bike.. Haven't found anything else out there that fits me and my riding style better.. Hope this helps. Jeff Here's a pic.. Maybe not the prettiest bike out there, but I'd take it anywhere.. Ha This one shows the added tank:
