I'd like to ride with you guys some time. Im not sure how my bike (WR250R) will do on the highway because I have never tried, but I will find out soon.

How's the riding up there? Possible move in the pipeline for me so the very thing I always want to know is whether or not there's any decent dirt within an hour or two.

Lots:

Do a search of these and "OHV" Stonyford, Foresthill, Georgetown, Mendocino, Penny Pines, Downieville

all within 2-3 hours (or less) of Sacramento.

Also some great street riding: in the Delta, foothills, wine country etc.

As far as riding in/near Sacramento? almost none except for the Delta area (street) and one basic, small OHV park (Prairie City in Folsom).

My buddy Mark puts these paid (reasonable fee) rides on.

Yes, the intial proposal was for a big bike ride. I will qualify that the ride I have in mind would include a high percentage of off-road riding ranging from dirt roads, logging road (with water bars), options (not manditory) for some single track, more dirt roads, rocky roads, gravel roads, some paved roads, more dirt roads, then some twisty narrow paved roads. The only highway miles will be from the start out to You Bet Road.

The BMW would be able to do it all (with maybe an exception of the single track if you have panniers on it).

Disclaimer: The final route decision on where to go will be based upon who shows up and what they all want to do (a democratic process). There are a zillion options!

My plan was to leave sometime between 9:30 (the planned start time) and 9:45 - 50 in case someone might get stuck in traffic.

Since you're coming from the valley, if you're familiar with where You Bet Road intersects Highway 174 (which runs from Colfax to Grass Valley) you can meet up with us at that intersection. We should be there by 10:15ish. You can top off your fuel in Colfax and be at that intersection within 12 minutes (+/-) from Colfax.

See my post above if you want to rethink riding the "pretty bike" (whatever that is). This will be an off-road ride but set up for the big bikes. Your call...

Will it be Chalk Bluff or Snot Bluff?

I rode with a group from this site before around here http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=292268 It was a blast and we had quite a mix of riders.

My guess is the wet spots in the red soil are going to be, shall we say, potentially entertaining. I have a 25 mile dirt route section planned from the end of the pavement on You Bet Road (technically that is on the section of Red Dog Road) up to Highway 20. This is just a portion of the ride, but we won't be entirely on Chalk Bluff the whole time. As such, the road conditions will vary considerably over the course.

Hopefully there'll be no snow at the top... or we'll need to improvise!

Well that's good to know. How hard is it to get a bike plated there, one that … let's say probably has all the smog crap taken off.
