CA DMV doesn't do a visual check for "all the smog crap". At least, they never did with any of mine. For instance, in 2007 I brought one in from Colorado (an '04 BMW R1150RTP), and they never looked at it. YMMV.

From personal experience, and I've done it dozens and dozens of times, you can go from downtown Sacramento to days and days of nothing but dirt in less than an hour. For instance, downtown to the little town of Dutch Flat in 55 minutes, easy. From there, you can pretty much go on...say...95% dirt to Boomtown, Nevada. And in between there, are days and days of dirt. Another example would be Sacramento to Colfax (45 minutes). From there, go dirt to Forresthill. Again, many dirt options, not to mention some nice OHV parks.

As for paved twisties, a good deal less than an hour from Sacramento to the west edge of some seriously stupid twisties heading east to 395, gateway to Death Valley.

Now then, want wine? Less than two hours to beautiful downtown Napa. I hear they have grapes there. Continuing west to Mendocino? Something like 4 hours or so. Of course, you'd have to take some majorly-nice twisties to get there.

Perhaps you want to ski? Don't get me started.

Less than 2 hours from SF, less than 2 hours from Lake Tahoe.

p.s. - Don't tell anyone. I don't want it getting crowded here like SoCal.

Not sure if you're riding or trailering? If you're riding, just meet us at the Highway 174/You Bet Road intersection and that will buy you 45 more minutes. Plan to be there by 10:15ish. That is if you can.

I am only 15 mnutes from the start so I'll be home for a while and will check here again. Let me know if you go and I'll wait there for you.

OK Tod, I'll have to wait until the next one. Hate to miss this cause you guys are running through what I used to consider my back yard.
Too many logistical problems with getting there on time.
Should I fry the knobbies on the freeway to get to you bet. Should I bring the 35 year old bike with 3" of suspension...
Running short on time and you guys have a tremendous head start compaired to the "sacramento riders".

I already had planned OHV at chalk bluff for next sunday the 12th.
(so this is a bit of overkill)

To calm for paragliding looks like a fine day to get a ride in.

Coming from Lincoln I meet you all at the 174 / You Bet Road intersection around 10:15ish.

My skills have been learned from years of honest dedication and relentless practice. Unfortunately, I forgot the kickstand was mounted on the other side of the bike when I stopped!

I tried to download the .GPX file for the route, but I couldn't get it to plot on either of my two mapping programs. Then I plotted the route on one of those programs but I cannot get it to fit on one map (or .PDF file). I will continue to work on it and post it if I can.

Good ride today. The group stayed together and there were no significant misshaps... except for parking the bikes in front of the hotel!
