Remember summer in the San Juans?

I had a long wordy post planned explaining our trip and the reasons I didn't take more pictures. Instead, I'll be long on pictures and short on explanations.

I was joined by fellow inmates, Steambike, Ricker and RoutCountyRob for an unforgettable ride around Silverton, CO.

My route started in Rangely to Meeker, New Castle, Glenwood, Carbondale. Over Mclure pass. Picked up Ricker, then over Kebler, Ohio and into Gunnison. Then lightning, rain, more lightning and lots more rain into Lake City.

After that adventure we slowed the pace a little and were able to get the cameras out.

Cinnamon pass was great fun and the north side switchbacks were unexpected but no too hard.

The shelf road portion.

At the top!

We headed down through Silverton and up to Molas Lake campground. It was a nice quiet place to stay.

Back to Silverton for dinner. Not too crowded for an August weekend.

Up the next day to a cool crisp morning.

We were joined by RoutCountyRob and headed up Hurricane pass.

Rob on his supertanker GS.

Another pass made!

California Gulch

Old mill in Animas Forks

Rode down Mineral Creek road to have lunch in Ouray.

After lunch, more rain, Red Mountain Pass and the the Old Lime Creek road. A nice afternoon.

Sunday morning, Ophir pass, Last Dollar road and the Umcompahgre.

Ophir pass is always stunning, but meeting the full bagger harley on the way down was even more stunning.

Last Dollar road was like riding into a place mat picture. Steambike and RoutCountyRob split for home in Sawpit. Ricker and I rode the Uncompahre until he peeled off towards Delta. I ended running the length of the plateau. About 120 miles of dirt.

Parting shot of the La Sals.

We covered about 700 miles in the three days. Great weekend with great friends.

Nice. It's been many years since I've been there and I don't even know if it's still there, but one summer in the 70's I lived in that old cabin at the top of Red Mountain Pass. Good times.

Great area!

Those high mountain passes are very appealing. Gotta try and get over that way. Lots of great riding out there!

Thanks for sharing. It is nice to reminisce about the San Juans during these snowy days. Those are some really fun mountains to ride around.

Those are some amazing photos, especyially the ones of Hurrican pass area. You're a lucky rider to be in the midst of that topography.
Some wanna wire their seats to provide warmth to their taints, I just want the option of operation without light.

Last Summer I based a few days in Pagosa Springs, I So enjoyed roaming about the San Jauns. But, riding through the blast furnace of Texas and Louisiana to get there and back was a killer for me. LOL! Next time, Hello truck with a rack on the back for the KLR .
