Laugh Where is Oahu? directions needed man....

aloha (ok maybe totally misspelled)

which subforum is the correct one to ask some stupid things about the
islands of oahu and kaui? tried nearly all (except europe and australia)
but can't see the islands in the middle of nowhere.

ok, i know it is part of the us of a and i have to fly with one of those
modern flying thingies ... for a long long time. something like 35hrs
from germany with a stop in SF for a couple of hours.

anyway ... i plan to arrive on oahu in 2 1/2 weeks, rent a car (motorsickle
seems to be very expensive, huh?) and drive around.

questions i have:

is there any ADVRider around?
is camping a safe and good altenative to a hotel?
any recommodations to camping grounds or affordable motels?

any places NOT to go?
any places which are a must see?

how to get from oahu to maui or this other island in the north ... i can swim but
would prefer something less exhausting.

thanks in advance ladies.

There's no dedicated Kanaka forum here (yet), but there are some interesting posts from Hawaii, mostly from the outer islands. For riding, Oahu pretty much blows unless you like scenery, heat, too many haoles, and stupid traffic.

Camping, for a non-local, is dangerous. You'd stand out like a serious target.

Things to see and do on Oahu...
Foster Gardens, the Honolulu Zoo and the aquarium that's just across the street. Stop in at Leonard's for a dozen malasadas. Hike to the top of Diamond Head and Makapuu Point. Take a glider flight on the North Shore at Dillingham Field, or walk down the Old Pali Highway from the lookout to the bitter end. Punchbowl National Cemetary, Tantalus Drive and Pu'u Ualakaa park

Go hiking. Rent a sailboard or a kayak at Kailua beach, and do a loop around the Mokoluas.

fyi- the sunshine in Hawaii will fry you in a hurry if you're not already equipped with a healthy tan. The usual warnings about hats/sunscreen and being out of the sun for mid-day all apply any time of year. If you wait until you're turning pink, it's already an hour too late...

Between islands, it's either boat or airplane.

If you'd like to see what Hawaii used to be like, spend a few days on Molokai.

Got Google Earth?....type in zip code 96734, and it'll take you to Kailua, where I grew up.

Wicked BI = Big Island

Here are some neat and interesting things to do if you get over to the Big Island of Hawaii...

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=658176

And get yourself one of these books, great for finding those hidden spots where the faint of heart never tread...

Safe travels,

Kirk, Is Patty's Hula School still going? I was there for a few months, 20 yrs ago, and saw a lot of Patty's bumper stickers. I wish I had nabbed a couple. (I collect stickers)

Philofax, Scooter can be rented on beaches around Honolulu. Visit the mall down by the beach. Hawiaan cloth, kites and sea shells for sale. Very entertaining place for this Idaho kid.

The shore road from Kailua to the North Shore is entertaining. Max 45mph, back then. Probably still the same. Lots of parks, art galleries, knick knack stores and surf shops.

A good dirt race track near Ewa. I watch winged sprint cars among other racing.

I spent a half day at Dillingham watching skydivers land in the surf.

I was warned not to camp and to stay out of the cane fields, especially after dark.

Laugh

Aloha,

thanks for all the suggestions and helpful tips.

we were flying to Oahu for the first week and after that relaxing and nice
week on waikiki beach (moana surfrider is nice but f*ing expensive) we took
a flight to maui. stayed in kind of a bed and breakfast, rented a wrangler jeep
and drove around the isle a dozen times.

went snorkeling at molokini, swam with turtles in turtle down and finally got
my "i survived the road to hana" shirt.

hawaii was fantastic, a little bit rainy on maui (rainforest) but still an exciting
experience.

Mahalo folks ;)

Hey!

Not sure about Patty's Hula. Don't see it advertised.

FYI I am on the last day of a two week trip off island. Rented an RV and went all around the south west. Zion is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited in the lower 48.

Aloha,
Baldness
