I've been emailing back and forth with Barb at KTM. Looks like you get a lot of value for 1270 euro ($1600) - 7 nights at Hotel Ibis in the center of town, breakfast and dinner included, riding a 2012 KTM 450 or 350 for six days, gas included (groups of 8, tour is limited to 24 people). Pick up at the airport on a monday, and dropped off the following monday. Think I'm going to go for it.

Three Romania Tips

1. The tsuica is a lot stronger than advertised. Don't spill it on your bike's plastic.
2. Never eat the cherries out of the bottom of the vishinata jug.
3. There is a cheap in-country air carrier Blue Air.

Let us know after the trip how it went. I would have gone this year, but got scheduled over.

drum bun (sort of like have a good road)

This is why I love ADVrider; info on anything I can dream. I got it into my head the other day that I want to do a dirt bike tour in Romania and this is the first place I though of.

DirtBaller, I sent you a PM to see how your trip planning was going and if you have any tips.

Sorry guys, I neglected my duty to update my post until now. I am all booked on my flights. I almost cancelled (would have lost only %20 of $1600 if canceled by April 10) because the flights from MSP to Sibiu and back were looking damn expensive for a few months.

I started an automated search/alert on Kayak.com back in January when it was about $1620 for the cheapest flight. I was hoping it would go down as April 10 approached but it actually went up to about $1750 or so. But a few weeks ago, on a whim, I tried a kayak search MSP to Sibiu, with the return two weeks later from Istanbul to MSP, and that flight was only $1500 complete, plus I get to see Istanbul for 6 days and 6 nights. Taxes were good to me, so I pulled the trigger.
Pretty stoked!

Tarom.ro is a Romanian airline that has a flights from Sibiu to Istanbul for 135 Euros. I had read back in January a theory that says often prices on flights are cheapest 2 months before the departure, that could be true, I just checked and right now there is a RT flight MSP- Sibiu -MSP for $1480.

Anyways, back to the trip planning I was mistaken in saying the 308R tour has 6 days of dirt bike riding, it is actually only 5, which is still plenty. Monday 6/11 is arrival day, Wednesday 6/13 is observing the prologue, Monday 6/18 is departure day, the rest are riding days. My friend from Phoenix is going to join me as a non-rider through the program organizer, he is getting a heckuva a deal, sharing the room with me and also getting the 7 breakfasts and dinners for only 245 euro's. He is more of a street bike rider (will actually be coming directly from observing the Isle or Man TT). And plans on renting a street bike or dual-sport to ride around on, and to take what is said to the the Greatest driving road in the world, just 25 miles from Sibiu - the Transfagarasan (look up the hilarious Top Gear episode on this road). I think I might have to rent a street bike for a day myself!

@Xylx , my buddy here brought back 6 liters of tsuica after visiting his Romanian friend, drank a lot of the stuff last year and cant wait for more! Be surprised if you can't run a 2-stroke on it.

Well I couldn't do it in June, I've got my own race career to foster

Anywho, I'm headed over there in 4 weeks. Couple of days on the front end and a couple of days on the back end for the food, beer, and discotheques!

I can't even spell RR, let alone write a ride report. That, and my iPhone 3gs is not exactly a picture snapping machine. But I will be sure to let you all know how much fun it was

Have a great trip Pneukid! May the rain gods not sh!t on your party. And be sure to report back on the "Food, beer, and discotheques", among other things.
One of the KTM race organizers, who is in Sibiu all the time, says that the best place to eat is an Italian place called MAX, looks affordale as well, can't wait to eat some great food after riding all day. http://www.max-restaurant.ro/menu.php

My friend who is coming with me will be renting a street bike from FTH Motors http://www.fthmotors.com/aboutus.html. So he will be touring around the area all day while I am riding offroad on the enduro tour. Then we'll meet up at night sharing the hotel room at the Ibis in Sibiu. KTM tours has been pretty good so far at accommodating my request for a non-rider to share my room with. He will be spending a lot less money for his street bike rental than my guided KTM 350 rental during the trip, so I am very interested in coming back sometime for a road tour if FTH turns out to be a good operation. They have a Budapest to Istanbul tour that sounds like a great itinerary on their blog. FTH looks like a decent operation from the little we could find on the net, good prices, and Attila (owner) delivers the bike to Sibiu for a small fee and picks it up. We will be sure to report back what we experience is some kind of rambling RR. I do take lots of pictures and tend to have an eye for beauty in all forms.

Well Gentlemen,

I leave today directly from work. Good thing the airport is directly across the street. It makes getting there a snap and I don't have to worry about parking.

I lost this thread for awhile. There are 6? of us from the Great White North heading to Romania for the 308R tour as well. We're ditching snowmobiles at the airport to head to warmer climates...well not really.

This should be a fun ride. A couple of us will be arriving in Sibiu on the 9th. Let's ride!

Hi Guys,

Subscrived!
Very interested in the Romania riding thing. I had a 5 days ride in Slovakia in 2007 which is supposed to be pretty much the same. Really nice places for enduro riding. I would have enjoyed more the rides if, back then, I wouldn't be back on a bike after 11 year of total stop tough..... I found out to have muscles I never used before in my whole life.
Nowadays, being back on track a bit more, I'm pretty sure it would be a much more enjoyable experience. Said so, I'd be eager to get any additional info/pics/RR if possible and feedback on the organization.
If positive, I would like to plan a trip for 2013. If people interested to join, let's think about it. I could be pretty flexible with dates.

2013 Romaniacs

I plan to go 2013. I live in Idaho which is a terrible place for ADV riders, all those dirt roads make too much dust. It's not easy getting to Romania. I've been a few times. My wife is Romanian. Going through Istanbul at first struck me as insane. Then I checked getting to Sibiu from Bucharest (Otopeni OTP). That ticket alone is $500 RT. Tarom has had a lock on Romania since Malev Hungarian went tango ulu. Tarom isn't my favorite airline, but there are worse, like United.

Best bet is to leave from the east coast (Dulles or Newark) and fly through Munich on Lufthansa even though they are partners with United. Lufthansa is great. Only 8 hours in the plane too into Munich. It's easy to get to Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich or Budapest, then it gets interesting. I don't recommend Budapest, it's a crappy airport, at least what I've seen of it. But I have thought about going to Budapest then taking the train to Sibiu or fly to Timisoara in western Romania (TSR) and train from there to Sibiu. Flying to OTP and taking the train to Sibiu is probably cheapest.Taking the train if you don't speak Romanian would be a challenge.

If you are coming from the midwest or Canada, Minneapolis (MSP) is great to Amsterdam (AMS) and you can get anywhere from there easily including OTP. Brussels is a good alternative. Don't be tempted by cheap fares through Milan. Place is a rathole. I'm going to research getting to Sibiu from in-country. The airlines always want to route you over their unused seat space in the wrong direction. Anyway, looking forward to the ride report on Romaniacs 2012.

UPDATE July 28, 2012
A new budget airline is flying into Romania. Wizz Airlines is a Hungarian airline. (great US marketing opp here- "Take a Wizz") I wasn't a big fan of Malev Hungarian, but there are not many choices. Wizz flies from Milan (not my favorite airport see above) to Arad. From Arad it would be fairly easy to get to Sibiu on a train I'm thinking. I have relatives in Arad who would probably know someone who might drive. I'm rethinking going though after the Ride Report saying the tour was not easy and required being in top shape with lots of practice riding on steep hills. I can find lots of steep hills to practice on here in Idaho, but getting in top shape at age 57... not so sure about that.

Finding a cheaper airline ticket for next year would be great, please keep us informed Xylx. Milhaus, I'll keep an eye out for the giant cluster of red and white maple leaves when I get there. Its down to a week left and and I'm just starting to get in shape - so much for the 4 month regimen I had in mind. My friend was putting an old KDX back together in my garage after spedning $1200 on engine and suspension, and he cracked the last 1.5 liter bottle of Romanian Tsuica left over from his boar hunting trip their two years ago. He stored in a plastic bottle, so I think it is now mildly hallucinogenic , that stuff has to be at least 60% alc. Still have to purchase supplemental overseas insurance, but I got my helmet all tricked out with the Contour camera and hydration system. Getting really excited for this adventure! Safe and un-delayed travels to you all.
