Can't Beat Winter in AZ: Casa Grande to Young (AZ)

Four brave souls, packed up and prepared for a long, blistery cold ride in southern.......

More like, four like minded souls got together to enjoy the 60* weather, and mountain twisties of southern Arizona.

Todays cast:
Mike B. on a Vstrom 650
Jason on a Triumph Tiger
Amanda&Mike on the Space Shuttle KTM

Bright and early, we met up in Casa Grande in preparation of our ride to Young, AZ. Mike B. was already feeling the effects of the plague his son generously decided to share with him, but he was hell bent on today's ride. After a brief game of fetch with the resident Shepard, we disembarked for our first planned stop: the Coolidge McDonald's.

Bellies and gas tanks full, we hit the Florence/Kelvin highway for a quick shot to Superior.

Unfortunately for Superior, we would not be partaking in the excellent dirt roads they offer. We buzzed on down US60 towards Globe.

From Globe, we hit 188 for today's best riding. 50% street and 50% dirt, all twisties, all mountain, and even some snow.

We took a few pit stops today, for some good conversation among the men, and quality time with my camera for me.

The crew of the Space Shuttle KTM. Check out my sweet helmet head.

Finally dirt! And trees!! Living in the desert surrounded by cactus and weeds, you need some tree time.

Why hello there Jason.

SNOW! Not enough to make a snowman with, but enough to hold in my hand.

Pit Stop #2

This road will be ridden on a later date. It begged to be ridden, but lunch was calling from Young.

We finally made it to Young. Jason and Mike B. had been talking up Antler's hamburgers all day. The best hamburgers EVER! Except that the staff of Antler's decided to go on vacation this week. Now Young isn't exactly a bustling metropolis. The only other eatery in town was a bar on the side of someone's house. It was so unremarkable that I don't even remember the name.

And that's just half the day...stay tuned for part II complete with detours, fire towers, and sun spots...

It was Alice's Eatery and Bar, but still unremarkable.

Part II: Young to Casa Grande

After our mediocre lunch, we headed back towards home. The journey back was the same route used to get there, but spiced up with a few detours. The detours were well worth it, though.

After passing several cars that insisted on dusting us out and not stopping to let us by (jerks) we opted for a 1 mile detour to the McFadden Fire Tower.

It was a nice little climb, with killer views.

The road home...

Mike B. was redefining the color green so we saddled back up and proceeded down the mountain.

We managed to find a turn off to an overlook of the canyon we spotted on the way in. Of course, one final detour wouldn't kill us. Unfortuantely, my camera did not like the fact that I was pointing it directly into the slowly setting sun. So these next few pictures are sunspot heavy. But still indicative of the glourous final views of the day.

And one more on the road out.

312 miles, and 12 hours later, we said our farewells and pulled back into the driveway. It was a fantastic way to end the weekend.

I don't need to live vicariously through others, I have a pretty exciting life.

Gee, you desert folks have all the fun. I just got back from my first snowbird duty. I have a little dual sport out there to visit. Next trip is probably September. I want to try and find a good dirt path from Globe to Benson. The section south out of Globe has me puzzled, though. Looks on the maps like a mountain recreation area more suited for ATV's.

Thanks for the report. I read this section every day because so many of you around Phoenix do ride reports. It gives me ideas for my snow bird trips.

Thanks for reading. This is our first excursion north if Globe so we don't really know the area to well. I can tell you that Superior has some excellent dirt roads to play around on. We take the 990 everywhere: street, dirt, two track, Atv trails, and single track. Superior has a little bit of everything to offer.

Enjoy your next visit!!
