Looking to test ride a DR650 in AZ

Ok, bug has got me. I am interested in a dual sport. Bought a Wee Strom last year and soon realized that it wouldn't satisfy my off road needs. Had a DRZ400SM that I loved, but with the mods I had, didn't want to take it off road. I think the DR650 would suit my needs perfectly. So, before I dive in head deep, I was hoping to throw a leg over one and try it out. Is there anyone in the greater Phoenix area with a DR650 that would be interested in letting me test ride? I have a few bikes that you could try out in return (FZ6, WR450, WR250, YZ250) or I could throw a few bones your way.

Let me know.

Oh well, no takers. I knew that was a gamble, but you never know. That's the one thing I wish I could change about our passion. But I suppose half of the fun is owning different bikes and learning the nuances of each. Thanks for those that gave a look. Ride safe and see you on (and off) the road.

Hi THB, This may not help you much in AZ, but after five minutes on a DR I knew I would be happy on one...they're just that competent at everything.

Ask your question on 'the DR650 thread'. You might get lucky.

Nuttin....

Went to the stealership today and sat on one. Closed my eyes and envisioned turning off of state route 87 onto forest road 147....then was abruptly woken up be Soupy Salesman...oh well.

Too bad, I thought you'd get a ride. I'm in Kalif now but headed home thru Lake Tahoe, not Phoenix. Looks like Eddy may have some options for you.

This isn't a hi-jack, it's a DR report.

Mid 70's in San Diego today for our 160 mile ride (200 last Saturday and 180 on Wednesday); including both up and down Black Canyon Road (dirt ). I followed tailgated one of the GS's going up the canyon and chased the DRZ back down it. The problem with tailgating, dust. Lots of dust. But if ya stay close enough, there's less dust. The DR did very well with two GS1200's, a KTM 950, a KTM 530 and a DRZ (with it's neck rung all day).

I knew there'd be no tight stuff, so I was geared up one on the countershaft (16t). With this gearing it pulled the dirt turns well in second gear and cruised comfortably at 75 for miles of hiway. The DR will run 75 easily with the stock 15t, but the 16t is much smoother for me.

Awesome way to spend a week! Definitely been a dry winter so I can relate with the dust. I mostly ride with my two boys and up until recently, that has afforded me with dust free rides. It has become apparent of late that I am the slow guy in the bunch now so that will soon change. Thanks for the report and have safe trip home.
