About an hour later...and this never woulda happened...

EC...you forgot to mention "The General"

Senor Gallo....this is his territory...and these are his "chicks":

Most people think roosters crow only in the morning.....when it's time to wake up...nope, that's not always the case. In Costa Rica, roosters crow

all night.......

So...what was that again...in order to fix the monetary system, you do away with the fed and go back to the gold standard.....??

This crawled up onto my tent in the night and molted...then crawled into my ear I think...

We covered a lot of territory that night....

Thanks,
Pretty low tech but here ya go.

Started in San Jose and basically went counter clockwise around the highlighted route - much of which doesn't really show on this map.

The RR has us about half way down the Nicoyan Pennisula at this point.

Thanks for coming along!

EC and Whizzer,

Really enjoying photos and commentary, great Ride Report.

A friend and I did a similar Fly-Rent-Ride in Peru last April Sacred Valley of the Incas, and you guys are making Costa Rica look like an awesome destination.

Thanks also for posting the map!

So, is this RR going to be finished before you need to start a 2012 version

anyway, enjoying following along as I sit at my desk when I should be working.

Ground covered in several inches of new white concrete from last night's snow storm and the morning drizzle that followed, this is the kind of day when traveling back to warmer climes with a cafe con Baileys is the most enjoyable...

Día seis starts early. Like 3:30 am early.

Much like back home, it's darker than a pocket here at 3:30. I know this as I see it all too often...

A little light on the subject...

...I climb out of my tent to greet the day. A fantastic hostess, Michele has opened the place up to us. Since the back of the restaurant opens up to the beach - and is literally opened up to the beach - it makes things like plugging in a couple of chargers for the phone and camera batteries pretty simple. Not to mention using the baños.

All the while Blurry the dog (not his real name) keeps watch...

...and startles the shite out of me when I first encounter him. He just sort of quietly prowls around.

Not able to sleep I decide not to fight it and dig out my chair. Finding a spot next to the glowing coals of the dying fire I settle in to listen to the waves crash while I catch up on my journal. Fancy term for my sketcky notes.

Headlamp, glasses and Tilley. I've got my geek on.

Fanning the coals and adding some fuel I get a small fire rekindled. In quiet reflection I relive the previous day. I call it the 'People Day'. We seemed to have met a lot of people in the last 24 hours. First there was the old man along the early morning trail. Then there was Mandy and her posse. The caretakers of the beach house. The fishermen. The Canadian at the last gas stop. Then, of course, Michele and Terry.

Like a scene out of a movie, the day begins to wake up. The waves slowly pick up their pace. The jungle birds start their chorus. A lone dog announces he's awake. The rooster answers him. The waves crash. More jungle birds join in. Another dog chimes in. The rooster answers him. More dogs. Another rooster. More waves...More jungle birds...more and more dogs...followed with more and more roosters... At about 0:25 they chime in.

The corners of my lips curl up a bit as I chuckle to myself thinking about how all of this 'peace and quiet' is going to eventually wake Dave up. Does that make me a bad person?

I'm dying for a coffee. Have everything I need to make it except for the smahts to heat my water up on that fire.

Instead, I just kick back, watch the sun come up and take in the day as it unfolds...

View from my spot...

...

...

The sun rises higher...

...the peace and quiet finally gets to Dave and he emerges from his tent...

...and finds a place beside the fire to long for a cup of coffee.

We're just in time for the local parade...

We dick around around awhile...start collecting our shite, talk about the day's lack of a plan and begin to wonder if that coffee will really show up. After all, it was a bit of a late night and Terry doesn't know us from Adam.

The only quiet dog in town, along with his buddy the cat look on, as we pack up...

About the time we have everything positioned back on the bikes an ATV rolls towards us on the beach...

...Terry and Michelle climb off with the nectar of the gods.

We hang out a bit while enjoying the best danged coffee in the world...

...

Dave isn't quite awake yet so we prop him up against the boat...

Finishing up our coffee, we offer to take them to breakfast and talk about places to eat around these parts...

...then once we get the last bungee stretched over the bike they lead us down the beach to a place they know of...

The loose beach sand is a bit of a challenge right out of the box this morning. We both manage to keep everything upright.

As we roll by, surfers are getting ready to hit the waves...

Believe the kid in the middle is Michelle's boy.

Quite a contrast in riding gear.

...

Not too far down the road we turn off towards the restaurant...

Arriving, we park in the shade and follow Michelle and Terry in. They, of course, know the owners and chat it up. The owner's little girl joins us...

She's a cutie. Hadn't given it a thought until just now but she was also exceptionally well behaved. Always a welcomed trait.

Breakfast arrives...

...

We sit and talk awhile after we eat...

...then slowly work our way outside and say our good-byes...

...and grab a parting shot of Michelle and Terry. Good people.

We head back into the village to catch the road south...

...stopping briefly at the Pacifico Azul...

...to leave a little something on the back of the surfboard closest to the door...

Día seis is off to a great start!

As día seis continues, we have no plan other than generally head south...

...and try to miss the dogs.

...

...

No place to be, we check out the side roads...

...

...and the beaches they lead to...

...

...

...

"Seems safe enough..."

We hang out here for a bit...

...

...along with the locals...

...hopefully no one will see us...

...

...

The riding doesn't suck.

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

Family Truckster...

...

...

...

The pile I have doesn't seem quite as bad now...

...

...

...

...

...

...

"Hmmmmm...where's that go...?"

One of my favorite shots...

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

"Guard rail? We don't need no stinking guard rail!"

...

...

How about a little break...

...

...

Not too far down the road we find lunch...

...

...

Cows that are disguised as goats...

...or vice versa.

...

...

...

...

In the parking area of the beach we find more howler monkeys...

...

...

...

...

...

Maybe it's the heat but I can almost make out a face in there...

...

...

...

...

A quick stop to check out the old logging truck...

That's some serious weight right there, Mister.

A couple more goat-cows...

Not sure if this is a wild boar or just a free range pig.

...

...

...

Laundry day at the old homestead...

Nice country...

...

Living fence posts...

Random foosball table shot...

...too danged hot to play, though...

Tin and grass make an interesting roofing combination...

...

Finally reaching the coast again...

...we roll through town looking for a place to stay...

...it's dusty as all get out...

...except where these guys have wet down the roadway.

Crappy picture but I love the fact there's nothing there to keep you on the bridge. Pretty sure the 'plank' to the left is the sidewalk.

Nothing leaps out at us as far as lodging goes. Matter of fact, the whole place reminds me of the bar scene from the original StarWars for some strange reason.

We check out a campground. It's not working for me. Bad mojo or something. Besides, after a 3:30am start and about a billion kilometers in a dust filled oven I'm ready for a nice hot shower.

Across the way from the campground is a surf school. We check it out.

Sara greets us at the bar where you check in...

...she's from Australia. Nice accent. She tells us about the room options then shows us the bungalow - for lack of a better word. It's basically the bottom floor of a two story house. Higher priced than the camping across the way and most of our lodging so far but still fairly cheap.

"We'll take it!"

Rojo approves...

We tuck our open beers under the bungees and roll the bikes over to the room and unload. Somewhere in the busy schedule we fit in showers and some laundry...

Doesn't do much good. Shirt is still clay colored. But it's a clean clay colored.

Chores out of the way we head back over to the bar/restaurant for some dinnah...

Killer fish...

We hang out for a while after dinner and have a beer or two before adding to the sticker collection...

...

It's been a l-o-n-g day so we don't hang out too much longer before calling it.

One more....downtown Mal Pais. A very remote, (at least from the direction we came from) odd, yet busy little town built for surfers. Sorry about the annoying smudge on the lens (wasn't tending to my lens hygiene and some other,) but you get the idea.

Ok, I lied.....One more camera video which has Howler Monkey audio on it. The first time you hear these guys, it's pretty startling. Usually a few of them are going off at the same time. We were pretty mesmerized by them the first few times we saw them, but they became pretty routine after awhile. Once again sorry about the quality but it does come into focus and you can see a baby howler and it's mother.

If you were wondering where that pinball machine you use to play on went....don't wonder any longer...

It's in Costa Rica. right next to the Fooseball machine you used to play...

As EC said..."Don't need no stinking guardrails here" a misguided turn, a 500 foot drop, and you'd never be heard from again.

With mental images of Mexican Drug Cartel Soldiers coming out of the bushes at any moment.....

Oh ya, we aren't in Mexico...

We arrived in Mal Pais

We make it to Mal Pais, get a beer, shower and do some housekeeping....in that order

It was another great day....

By now we've seen and heard plenty of howler monkeys but it still hasn't prepared me for the prehistoric screech that starts día siete.

Kinda makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up at 4:50 am.

Seven days. Has it been a week already? It will be by day's end.

Mucho rested I make my way up to the wi-fi and hopefully coffee.

Coffee's scheduled for 5:45. Guess if yer gonna have a schedule, coffee should be on it.

While waiting I do some surfing of my own...

...on the internet, of course.

Rojo (roh-Hoh) never moves from his spot in the comfy chair...

As we sit in the dark the howler monkeys continue...

Not the best audio but you get the idea. They're actually mucho louder down at the bungalow.

Along with 5:45, the coffee rolls around...

Rojo doesn't do coffee...

...makes him jittery.

There's a sign up sheet...

...I go for the ¢1000 plan.

After a couple cups of coffee and a chance to let the sun come up I wander back to the room...

We've got the bottom floor. You don't get much for 100 bucks these days.

Quick 'Blair Witch' tour of the room to include the not really drying very well laundry strung out all over the place:

Despite my crappy videography, I make a mental note that SCS would approve of these accomodations.

Dave's up. While he surfs and has coffee I take a look around the grounds...

Goat-cows can only dream of looking like this when they die...

The path to the pool looks inviting...

...

Near the pool is this bunk...

...I'll bet there's a story or two involving that.

All I can think of is an afternoon nap right there. If I try hard enough I can work that into my schedule today.

Another style room they have available...

Catching back up with Dave, I see that Rojo has moved and has begun his busy day...

Wandering back to the room we decide the laundry might dry a bit better out on a line and I just happen to have some parachute cord. We find a sunny spot...

...and get to work.

Chores done and beginning to get hungry, I ask one of the other guests if she happens to know when the restaurant opens...

Turns out she's the owner's mom. Her name's Barbara. She is visiting for a week or two.

We talk quite awhile. She tells the story of when her son Alex (?...my notes handwriting sucks - have another note about a Doug...) arrived 20 years ago there was nothing here. Not even the town. Never conventional...he was a yacht captain...three day trip on an HD from NJ to Miami...yadda, yadda, yadda...

With her son...

She was one proud momma and had every reason to be. Her son done good!

We talk with her son for a while. He's a very modest man.

Afterwards we make our way up to eat...

...where Rojo has moved back to his chair.

We order up breakfast...

...and discover Costa Rican bacon is what bacon in heaven tastes like.

Our waitress...

...the bill...

Before heading back to the room we check out the swing...

...luckily the action shots didn't come out.

Back at the room we have a little guest...

Right after he said, "You wanna piece of me?" he somehow he became a little shorter...

Doesn't take much to entertain us.

Checking the laundry, it isn't drying as fast as we'd like. We move it over to our ghetto dryer in full sun...

Guess we're not going anywhere for a while. Might as well head back up the the restaurant...

...and collect that souvenir T.

Speaking of T's...

...liking his.

Semi-clean dirty socks never looked so good...

Sara and her SO and little one.

We turn up the heat on the dryer...

...which seemed to work.

As much as it would be a great place to stay forever, we finally collect all of our gear and hit the road...

...where I don't discover until now that my stills are mostly crappy video of the view of my camera swinging from my neck.

Some random notes from the pages of Day 7:

Camping while riding in Costa Rica is not...not for me. Too much shite to drag around for little return, IMHO. This is later revisited.

Having said that, I wouldn't trade the camping in Garza for anything! That whole experience made it worthwhile.

Cooking/coffee set up: Don't bother.

Chair: What were you thinking?

Water: (knock on wood) is fine. Tap, bottle – chef's choice.

Fish is killer!!!

Sodas (restaurants) are the way to go.

Nothing dries quickly.

The a$$hole is king.

Then there's some jibberish about 'Whizzer's theory of invisibility' explained.
