CA to NM Loop in a week - Any suggestions?

Planning first week of April to head out from SoCal and meet the wife in Taos, NM and spend two nights.
I have that week with Sat/Sun on both ends.
Leave April 1st Saturday, back by Sat/Sun.

I have places to stay in Reno, Taos and Phoenix.
I figured I'd hit Reno the first day and Bonneville area the next.
Maybe down to Moab next?

Multistrada friendly roads and routes between Reno and Taos would be a welcome thing right now from well-traveled inmates.
Thought about taking the WR250X but I figure not enough time. I'll be doing 4-500 mile days.

Lead me the way...

Okay, I'll throw out some suggestions. You can ignore at will!

Are you taking Hiway 50 east out of Reno? I'm thinking you could hit Hiway 12 in Utah, but you'd need to drop south to get there. Also, in April, Hiway 12 will have some chilly areas, but if the weather looks good, it's an excellent road.

In the Taos area, you can take S18 and 76 south from Taos. Then go to Los Alamos and take Hiway 4 through the Jemez mountains (check out the Valles Caldera;also hot springs at Jemez Springs). Continue north on 550, then to 96, then north on 84, then east on 64 back to Taos. The problem with this route is that you'll be going through some high-altitude areas and you will need to check on the weather and roads before you go. Even if the roads are clear, be sure you have warm enough gear because the temps will be relatively low.

When you head south from Taos, take Hiway 14 from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. It's a nice alternative to the very boring I-25 stretch.

...appreciate the alt routes, that's what I'm looking for, time allowing.

I have a yearning to stop and gawk at Bonneville if only for an hour but could do 50 and go north.
I figure a day ti Bonneville then from there an interesting 2 day route thru Utah in the general direcetion of Taos.

That said, checking the almanac it's saying cold and rain in the area(s) after the first few days of April, if that's any indicator...
