Sydney "we ride coz we can"

COZ WE CAN

We're a loose bunch of riders male and female, who have been doing 200-400k Sunday rides around Sydney Australia for the last few years.

Originally we rode scooters taking them way beyond what they were designed for. It was fun turning up way out of town and watching peoples faces as they asked..."You rode that! All the way here! Why?" "Coz We Can" was usually the answer. We quickly upgraded our 125's for 250's which could cruise all day at 120k/h. The mainstay of our scooters were ones with the Quasar injected engines like the Aprilia Sports City, and the Vespa GTS 250. Then some of the crew got onto the Honda SH300's, and the bigger maxi scooters like the Burgman and the Tmax. We also did longer interstate trips and for several years took the scooters on the Snowy Ride, an annual two thousand k bike run to the Snowy Mountains that's quite famous in Aus.

We also ran with a couple of riders on bikes. Well it wasn't long before one by one we started crossing over to the Darkside and now all but one of the group has added a medium size motorcycle or two to our stables. At the moment the rides include a Vstrom 650, two Kwaka's a Z750 & W800, a Bonnie, two Ducatis (a Multistrada and a Monster), a Honda CB400, an Aprilia Mana, an F800R, plus we've still got our scooters.

We also have a few other riders who join up with us on different occasions. Once a month we join up with another Sydney based riding group called the Girls Ride Out. A typical days ride pans out something like last weekend. Meet up at about 8.30am with a set direction out of town, either South, West or North. East isnt an option in Sydney. This was our last ride report.

It was a beautiful late summery/autumn day, the rain had gone, and the sun was shining, 8 Boyz on their bikes, sorry readers no scooters today. We headed south through Nasho where we picked up our police escort only a few ks into the park. A slow moving green cop car was ahead of us and no one was going to overtake it so we had a 60k/h procession over the plateau and down through the water sodden forest, so much seepage across the road, it was good in a way not to hit these wet corners at speed. Eventually we emerged into the sunshine at Bald Hill. Sat around waiting for the Highway Patrol to go. Ian headed back for family duties while the rest of the boyz heading down to Haywards Bay where we met up with Bradr and Ben before a good run up Mac Pass for lunch at Robertson.

After lunch Bradr led us down Barrengarry Mountain into Kangaroo Valley, then out to Cambewarra Mountain lookout to gaze at the view of Nowra and the Shoalhaven then it was over the mountain to Berry, up the expressway to Mount Kiera, and along the Old Princess Hwy to Stanwell Tops where Mitch and I left the others to re do a great late afternoon run back through Nasho and into town. Nearly 400ks all up. Thanks Bradr, the South Coast is special. It offers the day rider a huge variety of scenic roads of all sorts as you travel up and down and around the beautiful escarpment. Fantastic ride thanks to everyone, With a fine bike good company and roads like these, I wouldn't be dead for quids.

Wisemans Ferry Loop

Sunday March 18. Well we finally got a ride together, after a late start we decided on Wisemans Ferry. Five riders, Ian on his 600 Mulitstrada, Jen on the Mana, Tony P on his Z750 , Jax on the sportscity 250 scooter and myself on the Bonnie. We headed off on a cool overcast day. The road was dry. Since getting the F800R, the Triumph hasn't been out of the garage lately, so it was very happy to be purring through the countryside. Got to Wisemans Pub for lunch as a dark cloud threatened to decend and it began to rain. Tony Jen and Ian headed back th Sydney through Dural. Jax and I, being the tragics that we are, decided to brave the drizzle which was hanging in the valley and we headed across the swolen river on the ferry and along to Spencer and up Mangrove Mountain to join the Old Rd at Peats Ridge and into town via Cowan. It was so nice to be out amongst the green valleys and verdant bush of the Hawkesbury River. We copped the occasional shower but basically the road wasnt too slipery and we got in an excellent ride.

It occured to me on the ride, that having four machines to choose from is a bit like a polygamous marriage. Just when you think that one of your wives is an unnecessary extravegance you fall head over heels in love again, well thats how it was with the Bonnie today. I wanted to ride it to convince myself that I didnt need it after getting the BMW, but all that happened was me realising whan an excellent motorcycle the Triumph is. Well balanced, easy to ride, with a 798cc heart of gold, big front wheel perfect for the rough roads that abound around this neck of the woods, the Bonnie a real motorcycle in every sense of the word. It was so good I'm going to take it on an o/nighter to Parkes next weekend. So its back to square 1 with the problem of how many motorcycles can one man have?

Anyway enough of all that. Why do we do it? We do it COZ WE CAN!
