Paradise
Nice---I was pokin' all around there last year looking for Paradise, Ky. ---but alas---as the song says.
"The Peabody Coal Company had hauled it away"-------true story. Good on you finding the Foundry----I knew it was there but wasn't as brave as you to actually find it----what a piece of history. They were watchin' me too-----and to ease their minds I just went up and talked to a guard. BigDog When I was a child my family would travel Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered So many times that my memories are worn. And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away Well sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols But empty pop bottles was all we would kill. And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man. And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away When I die let my ashes float down the Green River Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waiting Just five miles away from wherever I am. And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Big Dawg- The Foundry is on private property. When I was getting ready to leave two young men (20ish) w/ shot guns (not pointed at me), pulled up in a 4 WD Dodge and asked if I had a problem, genuine concern. I said no I had just checked out the Foundry. Then one of the guys said the property belonged to his family and it was ok to check it out as long as one didn't throw out stuff there. About a year ago there was a fire which burned about 40 acres and being in close proximity to the TVA you can imagine the concern!!!! Also not in the distant past someone got busted for growing about 10 plants...... So poking around does have it's risk. As I've heard of things being bobby trapped, so it's good to be observant of your surroundings and where you put your feet.

How about a little credit for me telling you exactly where it was down to the boat ramp and left on the trail. SHEEESH. You would have thought you found Atlantis.
BIG DOG the photo you took was on the road going to the boat ramp. Then just go left on the trail. |

Dang......I'd have no problem giving you credit, but that's not the way the story goes. I was out there on Sunday , and didn't get your email with directions until Monday night. BTW they were dead on.I actually got directions from two guys pulling out their John boat from a near by pond. I gave those anonymous fishermen credit.

This picture..if I knew how to post it, but here's the link to it.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/attac...1&d=1321702930 follow the road to the pond and see the road to the right going down to the water, right before that on the left is the gated off road/trail. It's up a little hill.

Excellent
Amazing stonework. How would you cut, transport and position such large pieces in the 1850s?

This thread brings back memories. I worked at the Paradise plant from '75 until ' 80. Lived about 3 miles from Rochester.
