Anybody remember how to remove the shift guides and forks from an RD400?
Manual really breezes over the process, it reads "remove shift guides and forks" ![]() The parts diagram shows some e-clips that aren't visible (only see one) and some plugs on the drive chain side. Shown here: ![]() are more obviously here: edit: realize only my thumb is gesturing toward a plug, while my index missed the mark - it's near my middle knuckle. ![]() Do these get pulled first? and if so, how and can they be reused?

There are circlips securing the ends of the shafts. If you take off the ones on the clutch side, you can just drive them out, popping out the rubber plugs. Don't use much force. If they're not moving easily, it's because you missed something. Just proceed with your eyes open.

And another thing...Make careful note of which forks go on which shafts, and their orientation, and which track of the shift drum they go in. Putting it back together is a bit of a rubiks' cube if you don't.

Thanks.
Are there circlips on the chain side under the plugs or something? I mean, whats stopping me from pulling them out on the clutch side vs driving them out to the chain side?

there's clips on both ends. The thing that is stopping you is that you can't remove the left ones while they're down in the recess behind that plug. Just take off the ones on the other end, and drive them through.
