New exhaust?

Where is the best place to buy a stock type replacement full exhaust for a 84 r80 rt? Seen some in chrome but not sure how long they will last compared to stainless.

Max BMW, Bob's BMW, and the other usual suspects have 'em.

Chrome will last quite a long time if taken care of. If you don't live near the ocean and leave the bike out in the fog, it should last 100K at least. And these days we've got the sealed batteries that won't peel the chrome off if the bike tips over. A few of mine have those characteristic stains, but they don't rust out - just looks a little funky.

They moved production to Nicaragua for most stuff last I heard.

In the PNW, yes. Remember that most of the rest of the country gets their roads salted. That doesn't help things.

We're now getting chemical de-icing which can badly corrode aluminum and rot out steel, so wash immediately if you encounter the stuff. You'll recognize it by the dark parallel lines about an inch apart down the roadway.

I guess because it hasn't been outlawed yet they'll use anything that works, despite it's negative impact on vehicles and environment.

Someone else will have to confirm that they're compatible, but I'd put a want ad on IBMWR for a '88+ RT/RS system which were stainless from the factory. You could probably get a full used system for $200-300. I've seen a set of these mufflers sitting on seattle craigslist forever. See if the guy will ship them.

Monolever exhausts are not compatible with twin shock bikes.
None of it.
And don't buy anything for an R65 either or any G/S or GS bikes or ST for that matter.
The Emgo brand mufflers are the best stock style mufflers for the money. Usually under $200.00 a set for the pair.
They are a "universal" BMW fitment and come with a reducing sleeve for the non 40mm systems. You have a 38mm system. As far as headers go, the factory stuff used to fit the best and be somewhat affordable, but notice the phrase "used to". On both counts.
The last set I installed were mui expensive and didn't fit very well.
UNFORTUNATELY, the only game for headers that are semi afordable are the American Made MACs. They are hit or miss on the chrome quality and the same goes for the fitment. Hit or miss. But they are stupid-cheap.
Ted Porter's Beemer shop was selling the Keihan stainless Sytem made in England. www.beemershop.com
Good quality and very good fitment, but not cheap. But a decent value.
Just my not so humble opinion after selling and installing LOTS of airhead exhaust systems for the past 17 years or more.
Oh, I have a set of Norton Style EPCO Pea Shooters (Stainless Steel) I'll let go for $350.00 plus shipping.
700 miles on them. They're aggressive sounding.

I'm gonna need a decent header/crossover replacement, if not the whole system (price dependent, of course). If you wouldn't mind sending me some photos I'd be happily second in line to pick over your leftovers
