I know soem course teachers who like their students to show up knowing basically nothing, That way they can mold them and teach them "their" way. Well, "their" way may not always be the best for everyone. When someone shows up with some skills then they go out of their way to try to prove them that the way they do things is all wrong because it isnt "their" way.

The only way I can see this making sense is if the bike is cradled by the knee if you do lay it down which can only happen if your leg is out. this would cause loads more pressure on your knee than a flat hit from the side- that or they don't want your leg catching anything? /shrug- i put my leg out sometimes and on difficult turns let both of my feet slide on the pavement so i get a much better feel for the lean of the bike using my legs to tell angles and such.
