The last time I did it, I had a clean AZ title (signed over to me and notarized at the time of purchase), walked into the MVD, asked to transfer the title to my name, told them I needed a OHV tag and a MC plate to go with it. 10 minutes later, I walked out the door with everything I needed.
No questions, no suspicious looks, no bike inspection -- nothing. If you're registering it in Phoenix, look into the emissions test requirements. I'm in Tucson, so I didn't have to deal with it.

As long as you are not Marcopa county, no issues. Got a title on my '83 XR about 2 years ago. After they did a VIN inspection to make sure it was not stolen the clerk asked me if I would like my plate for it now. That was it, the waiting in line was about ten times longer than the actual process.

Hey Bundy,
Just don't put it in your name if you want to ride it here. I never get stopped, but IF you do you'll have two weeks on a fix-it ticket to transfer it to CA, per dmv regs. Which of course can't be done, so it leaves you in a real quandry. Many get away with it for years. You can just 'borrow' it from whomever it's registered to. They have to put you on the insurance for it as well. Insurance is cheap over there too, as mentioned, like $50 a year. The only issue I see with this scenario is should you hit someone and injure them, they are gonna sue the insurance company, and when the policy limits max out they come after the insured. More liability than I wanted to put on my 'sister', if you know what I mean. At the 2-stroke extravaganze at Cooks every year, half the bikes have AZ or NV plates on them. I just picked up a killer little WR250F with a CA plate. DMV had two files on it, one from when it was an 'offroad' (they were red sticker in '04) and one for the CA registration. No problem transferring it. I guess the PO took it to New Orleans for a couple of years and plated it there, brought it back to CA with 7500 miles on it. I still don't know how they got it past the inspection, it doesn't have epa stickers, of course. They'll license it over there even if you have a CA address. I have a buddy that has a house in Havasu, he regs his bikes there, and has his DL there. He gets around having to have a CA DL by saying his primary residence is there. He lives in yorba linda.
